I have recently purchased 3 used PS3's for the kids.

On all three I can jailbreak using ps3break v1.1 and install open manager. On two everything works fine, but on the 3rd when I run open manager the ps3 freezes on a black screen.

The difference is that this one the drive does not work. I had hoped this would not be an issue as the newer hex does not require a disc in the drive.

Is there anything else I can try? Can anyone conform if the broken drive is the issue?

I am using the latest hex etc from PS3Break.com, and Open Manager 1.6b from the same site.

    Thanks

    John

If the logic board is bad on the blu-ray drive, then nothing will be able to load. It's kind of a security thing with the PS3. Just like if you don't have the dvd-rom drive connected to a xbox 360, it won't boot. So, unless you can get some replacement parts for the bd-drive, you're SOL on that PS3.

    Thanks.

I have tried 3 differernt managers and they all do the same,so I guess the logic board is done.

Sorry for the newb question, but is it easy enough to replace the logic board. Have seen a few on Ebay for s couple of pounds. Seems like it has to be from a similar PS3. Is that the case.

    Thanks

It is easy to replace the BD board, but it won't help you at all, because the firmware chip on the board is married to your mainboard. The way Sony repairs this problem is by going into factory/service mode and re-pairing the boards, but we don't have that ability (yet) so for now the only way to change BD boards is by transplanting the nand chip from the faulty board to the good board. It's a 64 pin BGA chip, and I do *not* recommend attempting it unless you are a soldering god. I tried it and wrecked both boards (and I'm pretty handy with soldering) If you want to attempt it anyway, here is a good video to show you what needs to be done: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Zh46cR6k3s]YouTube - PS3 controller board BGA swap[/ame]
