Noob Guide
Noob Guide –
01-16-2011,03:46 PM
Hey guys, I'm pretty new to the PS3 JB community..So far I've succeeded into jailbreaking my PS3 with Geohot's jailbreak (Thanks man!!) as well as installing MultiMAN and upgrading my hard drive from a 40gb to a 320gb myself...
I've made a fair amount of research in this forum and others on how to do/understand a lot of things and I'm still pretty lost...(as many other noobs are, I'm sure)....
So I thought it would be a good idea to have a noob guide where many questions would be answered about PS3 Jailbreak/Backing up games...Anyway.. keep in mind I'm a noob.. not a programmer at all but quick learner...And again I have searched a lot (this forum as well as others) for the answers to my questions but it always seems like everybody is ahead of me and knows what they are talking about..
I'm sure a lot of noobs also need help with a lot of other questions and I think it would be great if we could keep this post on the frontpage to help spread the knowledge and help newcomers like me! Thanks again guys and try to be patient!!...
Q. The first and most infamous question for noobs looking to jailbreak their machine is of course: The dangers of jailbreaking...Can someone be clear about this subject? Has anyone tried going online after jailbreaking their PS3?
Q. Next noobly question: Can you "unjailbreak'' (jail?, wtv) your machine if you are afraid of being banned? And then repeat the jailbreaking process whenever you want to play a backed up game and vice-versa..
A. Resolved: So part of the answer that I posted before was right.. you just re-install the original firmware to ''unjailbreak'' your device but you do it in recovery mode.. Just tested it, worked perfectly..
Q. How do you enter recovery mode?
A. Easy: You press the on/off button on your PS3 and hold it. Do not release it until the PS3 turns off. Once it is off release and repeat the process until you hear a beep followed by two quick beeps.. release right away and you will be on recovery mode.
Q. What the hell are eboot.bin files and how do they work? I kind of understand the fact they are the files that let your PS3 recognize a game and stuff but where and how do you put them in your ps3?
A. Check below in the Xrief portion of the post.. it answers not all but some questions about this..
A2. Do not worry about this anymore. Follow the tutorials I linked in my last reply. Life is beautiful.
Q. What are the ''Syscall'' files I keep reading about..Are they the reason we can't play backed up games on Geohot's Jailbreak right now??
A. Do not worry about this anymore. Follow the tutorials I linked in my last reply. Life is beautiful.
Q. What is the ''Games'' folder.. where do you put it in your PS3? Do I need a homebrew files manager to manage my games or a back up manager like MultiMAN (that I haven't had the chance to really try out yet) can do the job??
A. Again, our good friend Xrief provided the answer to this; I checked myself while playing with MultiMAN and the folder is easy to spot...4
A2. Do not worry about this anymore. Follow the tutorials I linked in my last reply. Life is beautiful.
Q. Where do I get the ID of my game?? Has this anything to do with the eboot.bin files??
A. Part of the answer to this is below, follow the instructions by Xrief...

Q. Is it already possible to play backups on ps3 with the firmware of geohot?
A.

Edit: Here it is for you:
1. Backup game using multiman.
2. Rename the PS3_GAME folder to the game ID. Move the folder to /game/. <---- nothing sais this is necessary, had problem here.
3. Install the appropriate PKG. (I installed PKG first, then moved with already written eboot etc, but should work the same)
4. Start the game from XMB.
Thats the only way its possible to run backedup games right now.. with 3.55. Im not a programmer.. just a quick learner who figured this out after lots of trial and error.
-Where and how do you rename the PS3_GAME folder??
With multiman... Its in hdd0/GAMES/ when you do a backup.. You rename it by first holding select + start to bring up the file manager, go to hdd0/GAMES/ and press select + X while hovering over the folder, to rename. Ofcourse you need multiman open when you do this.. Easy..
-Where do you get the game ID??
It's the folder PS3_GAME is in..
-Where is the folder /game/???
Same folder you find /GAMES/ after you made a backup.. in /hdd0/
Im adding that, to MOVE the folder.. you cant have a folder named the same in /game/.. if you have, delete it. Then you open that folder in the SECOND pane, in multiboot.. and you hover over the source folder, and press select + O
-What package are you talking about?? eboot??
Signed packages people give out.. Its everywhere... I think they include the eboots, and they make this shortcut in XMB, like PSN titles.
Popular (but a bit off the subject) question I have seen around the net..
Q. Once Ive upgraded my ps3 internal hard drive, can I put back the old one and just swap them like if they were ''memory cards'' without fear of formatting any of the two??
A. Yes you can! Just tried it.. So if you want to use one of your hard drives for your backed up games and the other one for PSN in fear of getting banned... well you can!.. (just make sure you jailbreak only one of the two hard drives...Duh.)
-Ok so I made a little mistake here...If you ''unjailbreak'' your PS3 it does not matter which hard drive you use it will still be ''unjailbreaked''.. so basicly you either jailbreak your PS3 or not..Still it's fun to have two hard drives and to be able to swap.. the operation is very easy and that way you have more disk space available..
Edit: - http://psx-scene.com/forums/f187/bac...-online-76010/ - Link to thread for backed up games that work online.. (thought it was a great idea)
-Found another question plus the answer to it and added it to my list...
Edit 2: - Added another answer I found by googling.. Help me out here guys!...
Edit 3: -Thanks to Xrief again for following up to his little guide... Updated the ''Unjailbreaking'' question and added another useful question
Edit 4: -Ok so I answered one of my own questions and added another one (with answer) to help people out ''unjailbreaking'' theire machine...Alex thank you for your feedback and other noobs like us don't hesitate to ask other questions we can add to the guide...
-Corrected something about the whole ''hard drive swapping'' info...
-I'm kind of dissapointed that other more experienced users won't share with us.. I know some of the questions might seem dumb to you but we're just trying to catch up here..
Edit 5: Noobs, our problems are solved... Easy way to do it.. follow the tutorials on the front page! Just understand that everything you do is at your own risk...

When i wanted to start the backuped game now, from XMB, it said it was "corrupted". I just installed the PKG again from my USB, and it worked. Took 2 sec. Nothing lost. Saves was OK.
