OK, I have the SDK set up, and while my right eye is still blurry (this might be the vicodin talking), I feel pretty functional. I compiled Open_manager, so tonight I will probably start digging into the code to break out the presentation stuff and make it configurable.
For those who do NOT know who I am, I wrote X-Marbles and MXM for the original Xbox. MXM was the first open-sourced menu system for both disc and hard drive, and the second menu system after Evolution-X came out. It was also EXTREMELY skinnable, and had a scripting engine (made from scratch) that was good enough for one adveterous user to write a working Tetris game in.
MXM was unique in that you could skin it with any number of images and VIDEOS. The big feature was using preview videos for the games... and there were hundreds of skins available for it.
There will be more challenges with the PS3, for one, multiple video modes will be taken into account up front. Also, I'll probably look for a decent ECMA-compliant scripting language to drop into it. Ideally, I'd like for skinning to range form extremely simple and easy (drop in an image and go) to complex (3D motion, transitions).
This is an unofficial announcement. I plan on waiting until I get some basic screenshots before I make an official announcement.
This PMS should last for more than a few days per month, and make men happy, for a change.
