So I'm trying to back up my disk of MGS4. I heard it has problems due to a file being over the 4gb file limit, and that you have to split it. Anyway, I'm trying to back up to my internal and the manager freezes when it gets to a certain file. The guides say to FTP the file to the PC, but I have no way of doing this without first backing it up.
How do I back it up?

Put the disc in your PS3 and start up blackbox FTP on your PS3.
Go to your PC and connect with your FTP program of choice.
Go to the DEV_BDVD on your PS3 (maybe named slightly different, I'm trying to remember off the top of my head here)
Transfer the files from DEV_BDVD to your PC

If I'm not mistaken, you can do the following:

    1. FTP to your PS3
    2. Select the blu-ray drive, NOT your hard disk
    3. Copy the game to your PC DIRECTLY "from the blu-Ray" (no ripping)

    Haven't tried it, though.

I've done this a lot and you are correct.
