I have heard people have got it running on an external. The normal psarc method is giving me some problems. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Or have i heard wrong on this one? It really is not helping any that the psarc file for this game has about 140000 files in it.

There is a 6 GB psarc file that in in the Shadow of the Colossus folder. Unless you can figure out how to edit it and remove some of the content it wont work. Ico Will work fine, it's just about a 1 GB psarc file. Unless you remove the Shadow of Colossus .psarc you are not going to be able to run it on External.
I did the same thing with the God of War Collection. Just copied every thing but the 6.5 GB file and played the first one, than put it on my Internal and removed all the GOW 1 data. I had a 30 GB at the time so every byte was precious, now I have a 750 GB so I don't have to worry about it anymore. $65 well invested :D . If some one figures out how to do it I will keep an eye out for you.
ok..this is what i did to get it to work on external. i first used opensplit to split the 6gb part then i put the game on a usb stick and used multiman to transfer it to my internal hdd. after that i removed my usb stick and then proceeded to transfer the game from my int hd to my external hdd. after i was done i deleted the one on the int hdd. finally i went to the copy on the ext hdd and pressed select + X. it asked to install data to the int hdd and i said yes. after it was done it took me to the XMB. i went to the ico/shadow disc icon that now replaced my bluray game inserted and started it. it worked for me on my ext hdd then :D hope that helps :D
