DETAILED TUTORIAL ON HOW TO PLAY PS3 BACKED UP GAMES WITH FILES LARGER THAN 4GB USING FILEMANAGER:
Take ur file(s) (larger than 4gb). Let's say its called "bigfile.ext". Use any splitting software (e.g. HJSplit) and split it to files smaller than 4096MB (4GB).
u'll end up with "bigfile.ext" which is a ".001 file" and several other files like "bigfile.ext.002", "bigfile.ext.003", "bigfile.ext.004", etc...
The trick here is to change the extension of the first file ("bigfile.ext.001") to just "ext". IF YOU DON'T DO THIS, although it's not named "bigfile.ext.001" it is a .001 type file, and WHEN U COPY IT TO YOUR INTERNAL HDD, YOUR MAIN FILE WILL END UP BEING "bigfile.ext.001" which u do not want. U want just "bigfile.ext" inside your internal HDD.
In order to change this extension, u have to go to *control panel, *folder options, and uncheck "hide extensions for known file types" under the VIEW menu. That'll make the name of bigfile.ext show as "bigfile.ext.001". Now u just have to delete the .001 part and agree to run the risk of making the file useless.
Change the rest of the files to #.part like this:
"bigfile.ext.002" to "bigfile.ext.1.part"
"bigfile.ext.003" to "bigfile.ext.2.part"
"bigfile.ext.004" to "bigfile.ext.3.part" ... and so on...
replace the main unsplitted file with all ur new files, and copy the game folder to your external HDD, and then from it to your internal HDD using filemanager. The game will work no prob. Tested with Uncharted
ENJOY!!
Note: Confirmed working on GoW 1+2 collection perfect! (been playing it after bosses on both to test)

If I understood this correctly, you end up with the whole game on both the external and internal HDD, what is the point of that?

No you got it wrong, you take one file larger than 4gb split it, rename the 2 files you got as mentioned in the tutorial, than delete the original big file.
at the end you get 2 files smaller than 4gb at the same folder instead of the big one.
GoW 1+2 work great externally
Edit: you're right, the one who wrote the guide said to keep the files internally...but I deleted them cause there was no need, it worked externally with the splitting only. gotta test it more XD

Oh ok, so there is no need to have the files on the internal drive, great!
Gonna try this out on a few games, thanks for the info

None of that makes sense to me. You're saying split the files then put them on the internal drive.. well what use is that to us that want it on our EXTERNAL? Or are you saying the PS3 can natively read .ext and .ext.1.part from external and treat them as one file?
That "guide" you linked is the EXACT same one from the Comgenie File Manager post and from what we've seen, it CANNOT be used to play these games from external. You can't just "split" the files and play them on the external.

Tested this with GoW Collection + Motorstorm 2, both starts up fine from external, however on 1 occasion in MS2 loading up a race, it just kicked me back to Playstation menu. I think this partially works, need more testing... Killzone 2 + MGS4 next.
Killzone 2 doesn't work, blackscreen on load, MGS4 loads up fine, playing act 1 now, even the act 1 install works. No clue if this works 100% until somebody play/test through the entire game.

Well I'll be damned.... so the PS3 *can* read .part and join them properly from external, letting you play? That's impressive.

Yes it works in game, tested gow1 till middle of level 1, testing GoW 2 now, playing first level. Make sure you split the 6+ gig file into 2, naming first file the same as original, 2nd file as filename.ext.1.part etc...
in MGS4, I deleted my game data and reinstalled the 8min initial install data, and it installed fine.
