Ok, I know that im new to this forum and im gonna get ripped on for being a newb. Lets get that out of the way so that I dont have 100 posts calling me a f****** newb and to look it up myself. I have had a ps3 since it came out and recently would like to be able to play backups from my ps3 fat. It is up to date with the most current ps3 update (not sure which one im not around my ps3 right now.) Anyways I have no idea where to even begin as I am just getting into the ps3 hacking *scene* right now. If anyone could post a step by step guide for how to hack the ps3 if need be, and how to save/boot backups that would be ideal.

I have been looking for an answer to this for about an hour now, if there is a forum that has already done this please direct me to it.

Yes, A 3.55 "jb" (cfw) is available, no >3.55 "jb" or cfw yet.
Yes, A 3.55 downgrade is available. But not to lower than stock firmware! (What it came with)
No >3.55 downgrade is out there yet.

    Great.

I appreciate the quick response. ASSUMING they can unlock this firmware in the future how do you currently play backups on your ps3? Is a fat and a slim model different in the process?

It's probably going to be a while before 3.56 and larger will be able to have CFW, if you're desperate it's best to acquire a 3.55 console while you still can, because soon consoles will start appearing with 3.56 or 3.60 at purchase.
    1. Install 3.55 OFW if below 3.55.
    2. Install CFW of your choice in recovery mode.
    3. Install Backup Manager of your choice.
    4. Install BDEMU355.pkg if you installed Multiman.

Ok and this is where my newby-ness is going to come out. How do I install a CFW onto the console? I understand how to get into recovery and the device needs to be formatted in FAT32. Then how do you install backup manager and the .pkg file?

To install a CFW or OFW it's the USB install method. When in recovery mode there is an option to install firmware from a thumbdrive. You put the firmware in x:\PS3\UPDATE (file goes in UPDATE folder) and it will find it and install. Once you have CFW on your PS3 you'll have an option in the Game XMB called Install Packages. That's how you install backup managers and homebrew.
