Help: Slow external HD transfer in some games

Hello, guys.

I have a Ps3 120gb model with the latest Multiman and smtng weird is happening. Some of my games are really a pain to transfer from my external HD to my internal one.

For example, Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare has 10gb and it gets transfered in about 10 min. But Mass Effect 2 has nearly the same size and it takes FOREVER to transfer.

In the beggining of the process, I get a decent transfer rate. But it gets lower and lower with time. After 5 min and only 2,5gb transfered, the transfer rate falls incredibly to 1 mb per second.

Really, it's insane.

At first, I thought my External HD was screwed, but all other games run ok. Bayonetta and Mass Effect 2 are the only problems.

Btw, I copied all the games I have from original BD-ROMS. Bayonetta and Mass Effect 2 I got from Bit Torrent. Could that be the problem?

Any ideas?

I got an idea, count how many files each game have, and i bet the one with more files takes longer. Thats because of how hard drives work, not any manager or ps3 or anything else.

And you would be correct sir. The games that take longer to transfer have a lot of small files, hence more reads and writes = more time.

you should try naughty bear and see how long it takes.

Yep. I recollect a similar incident. I was FTP'ing my Demon's Souls back up into my internal drive and found that it was taking nearly 45 mins or so to be transferred. The file size of the full game was 8.12GB and the total files were around 12,512. It had a lot of small files, which were taking a long time to transfer. I remember transferring Killzone 2 (12.3GB) in 6-7 mins flat. It hardly contained 67 files and one of which was 6.51GB alone. So I guess, more the number of smaller files, the more time it takes to transfer them. :(

Yup, it's just the nature of FTP because each file transfer has to kinda "login" to the FTP server for want of a better word. (I won't pretend to know off top off my head) :)

Good way of working round this if there aren't any files over 4GB, is to just copy all your stuff to an external drive - then use something like multiman to copy it to your internal on the PS3 if that's where you want it.

Takes much less time that way, for example playstation move heroes as an extreme example has about 40,000 files. That would take about 3 hours over FTP. Using multiman still takes ages, about an hour, but much better than 3 obviously.
