    Hi,

I am looking for an new PS3 HD for my collection.
    I stuck between Samsung HM640JJ and HM641JI.

The are almost the same price. The HM640JJ is faster (7200rpM).
But will this cause unhealthy PS3 temperatures?

I really don't know. The noise level is nearlly the same. Just two different
    rpM!

Avoid 7200 RPM ones, they're getting too hot for the PS3.
Also, check the height: best ones should be 9.5 mm to fit the HDD tray without modifications.
Otherwise, you can go for larger models (usually 1T+) which are 11.5/12.5mm, but you had to mod your tray.
There's a tut somewhere, just check it out.

I got the samsung 640JJ in my ps3. Havent had any problems with heat yet, even with 5 hour gaming sesssions. It's a slim model though. THe nice thing about the 7200 drive is I get average of 41 MB ftp tranfers via direct ethernet cable. Makes transferring big games a snap.

In my case i went for a Samsung SpinPoint 1TB HDD, 100$ shipped from newegg. I had to modify my tray to fit but once done everything works well! I've been doing intensive playing and no problems so far! If you go this way, check my signature for the tutorial i made to modify your tray (if you got a slim).

Two days ago, I installed the HM641JI in my PS3 slim. I did as per the last post on this forum. No problems so far and I've noticed no difference in speed compared to the 320GB drive that it replaced.

I just installed my 500gb yesterday. It went very smooth and was super easy. Took about 5 mins to install and around 5 hours from start to finish to back/restore all my backed up games and data.

Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500 GB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive 2.5 Inch, 8 MB Cache, 5400 RPM SATA II WD5000BEVT On Amazon is only $56. Cant go wrong with that

What about this one ? Momentus XT | 7200 RPM | Seagate

But as someone wrote in this thread, no speed improvement with a new one with 7200 RPM ?

I read somewhere the PS3 only does 5400rpm but after reading this
    7200rpm vs 5400rpm HDD for the PS3 | PlayStation® Community Forums

7200rpm hard drive has it's benefits if only to increase loading speeds by a little.

As others have said 7200rpm hard drive does increase temps so you might want to buy one of those external fan accessories.

this stuff about 7200rpm is really weird:

i changed mine to a 500gb 720rpm 2.5" can't recall the brand or model. Works fine so far and I do check the ps3 for temperature as I have a little cable that goes inside it to let me know the average temperature of the whole machine through a lcd screen and to be true, no difference so far sorry :P
