I've grown tired of the countless posts in multiple threads under all different sections of this forum. There is a lot of misinformation/misunderstanding going around about how exactly to get game updates to install and function correctly.
I'd thought i'd create this guide to show how I got it to work with my equipment and software, but it's so easy it's not funny. It's all about having the right payload and homebrew to get updates to work.
For starters forget about debug updates, modified EBOOT.BINS, PSN Proxy Download managers and all that garbage, YOU DON"T NEED THEM! EDIT: Sorry we still do for some stubborn games. That was so yesterday
This is what i use:
Fat 60gb PS3 - 3.41FW (HDD upgraded to 500GB)
Internet connection ENABLED with NO PROXY, just have it setup as normal. Don't be scared, the PS3 will NOT automatically update your firmware! It will only tell you an update is available.
OLIMEX AVR-USB-STK
Heremes v3 payload with the wanakiko modification <-It must be this payload!! (no doubt there will be a Hermes v4 released very soon)
Cover Manager RC7b (This has the vital 57410 poke enabled, i'm sure all backup managers will be patched correctly, but just use this one for now)
With this combination of payload and backup manager everything should work perfect.
Just to make sure of any game data corruption from any previous patch attempts, delete the game data for the game you want to update (no need to delete games saves)
Start up your PS3 in jailbreak mode, ensuring your internet connection is working.
Load Cover Manager (rc7b)
Load the game you wish to update. (Load your games mounted from the BD. Disc-less mode seem to have a few issues with patches. Don't use Direct Boot Mode)
If you have your internet connection setup correctly it should notify you straight away if there is an update avaliable.
Let the update download and install (just exactly the same as pre-jailbreak days)
Done! Update should install and the game should boot and be 100% playable
All of my games so far have updated and worked fine. There may be some games out there that i don't have that still may not work, sorry can't help you with that.
If you don't want to use Cover Manager then you will have to use NZHawks Awesome Peek & Poker.
Go to offset 0x80000000000057410
Change the first 8 values ONLY to 48000098
Press x to apply changes then press x to exit
Load your game with your chosen backup manager and updates should work!
Note that with this method you will have to poke the memory offset everytime you reboot your PS3.
So to recap
Hermes V3 with wanikoko mod
Cover Manager rc7b
Thanks to all you sceners out there - Hermes, Jurai2, Mathieulh, Wanikoko, OLDCell for his now extinct peek & poke guide, and to anyone else contributing their time and effort to the scene.
Cheers
EDITS:
14-10: Gaia Manager rc4 by Drizzt84 has also been released with the 57410 offset patch
Disc-less mode seem to have a few issues with patches, load your games mounted from the BD
FIFA 11 now updates and works 100% without patched files! Get the new hermes fixed payload
Made this exact same thread yesterday and some moderator deleted it!!
Yeah i noticed that mate, i called out to the mods asking why they deleted your thread but i got no answer. I'll put you in the thank you section because i used your quick guide for NZHawks peek & poke patcher
ust when we thought Waninkoko has make the perfect mod for Hermes v3 payload that can be used to install retail PKG files, now Mathieulh has come up with a better patch for his original PSGroove payload. He stated that Waninkoko’s way of install the retail package files is not the correct way. He also said that issues may come up with the patch. Even the PSJailbreak patch was left improper way according to him. So, he has patched the payload the correct way, and has released a more stable patch in the official PSGroove’s github page.
So why would we be using wanakiko patched hex file? Surely it would be better to use the more stable patch??
These are just queries not snide comments and stuff i am sure other people will be wondering about.
Tested
God Of War 3 - Downloaded/updated game loads fine
Fifa 11 - Download/updated - wont work without original disk
Uncharted 2 downloaded/updated - Works fine
Mathieulh's PSGroove update may be a cleaner code but it's actually a step backwards. It doesn't contain the controller fix and the no disc mode. Actually the code he released doesn't even support backups! Mathieulh has always stated he has no interest in game backups, and doesn't really want to support it.
