Is there any way of playing GT5 of from an external harddrive?

I've read that this game can be played internally but how about a fix on an external drive?

Not at this time. The problem has been mentioned and talked about many times in the past. The current drive format running on external HDD is FAT32. This has a limit that wont allow a file over 4GB in size. There is a GT5.VOL file that is well over that size limit.

Now there has been some games (ie: Uncharted 2) that have .PSARC files that are over 4GB. Its been found that some of these can simply be extracted allowing the larger file to be split among the extracted files (as long as they are under 4GB).

With recent events, the HOPE is that we will be able to use another format that will allow larger individual files.

In future you may also want to do a little research. This is something that has been answered many many times. I only say this because there are a lot of frustrated ppl here that will take this as an opportunity to vent. With you being their outlet

i tried the psarc thing with gt.vol but with dragonunpacker or something like that instead because its supposed to be able to deal with .vol...but apparently only .vol from certain games so no luck...

I think theres a way to open it up. This is purely an assumption based on the Install to HDD feature in the options of the game. It installs 8GB (if memory serves me correct) to your HDD. I have to assume thats coming from the .VOL file. If that file can be extracted and the proper files put in the proper place it might be possible to run it from an external.

I personally havent even looked into it myself. ive had other tasks that are much more important. Plus the recent video showing that the PS3 doesnt use any special secret format means it would be a waste of time imo.

Ill just wait till we can change the format of the EHDD and run the games perfectly from there. I expect the PS3 to be no different than the Wii at this point. With CFW and near perfect EHDD compat.... If not more so
