I've read that deleting anything from the hard drive and then trying again will get it to work.

If that doesn't work then I reccommend editing the EBOOT to look at USB and load the game from there, since I presume the install problems happen because there is clash between a game loading from the HDD and wanting to install to the HDD (fair enough this doesn't happen with the mounting method, but in that case the PS3 thinks the HDD game is a disc).

I had exactly the same issue and deleted something from the HDD using the XMB before running the game again (usually an old save game).

    Good luck!

Then it just might be the game doesn't work with the path changed to HDD.

So i took a stab at this one as well with my own disc.
First tried the pkg's out there, on 3.41, i got the disk space issue.
Followed the tutorials, and made my own PKG, edited dev_bdvd -> dev_hdd0 (3 occurances) and repackaged. Now it seems the eboot.bin does not find the game files, it tries to show an error, but can't find the ini file to read it from.

Only changing dev_bdvd -> dev_hdd0 should be good, right? Shouldn't it look in dev_hdd0/BLES00901/usrdir from then on?

no but right next to the string that you change to hdd0 there should be some thing that says Ps3_game thats where it is looking for the new vegas data

So, to get it to work from hdd0/game folder..

    /dev_hdd0/PS3_GAME/USRDIR/
    i changed it to
    /dev_hdd0/game/BLES00901/USRDIR

Still complaining about diskspace, but it's showing the error at least.

What if you try a different directory for the game, it sounds like the problem is that youre using /dev_hdd0/game/BLES00901/USRDIR which is what the game wants to create and install to. Make it something like "/dev_hdd0/game/BLES00001/USRDIR" and delete /dev_hdd0/game/BLES00901/. This way the game will use "/dev_hdd0/game/BLES00001/USRDIR" as the boot directory and still be able to create /dev_hdd0/game/BLES00901/ for its install directory.
