I use safeimg 1.1, its really easy to use.
Open the application click optimizer tab and click on Split> 4gb to OBM install FMT. Then you click on "open RLS folder" and select the game folder that needs to be split (ex blesxxxx) and wait untill the program finishes.
so we can move files from a pc to the hard drive with the programs you guys suggested how do they work do they split them to get them over there then rejoin them once they are on the fat32 drive? can i just take the internal drive out of the ps3 and move games to it the same process?
NO don'T take the hard drive out.... here are your options :

Open it and find the folder of the game (blus or bles) and it will check if you need to split files... then if it says you do need to split files click on the bar that appeared and click the square where it says split and click also the square erase original file.
Then at the top you will see SPlit file. click that and then let it go...
When it is done , create a folder called gamez on your external hdd.
Copy the folder of the game (blus or bles) into the gamez folder.
Then plug the external hdd to the ps3, go into multiman and open it.... it will scan and you will se the title of your game.
go over the game and hit O on your controller .. it ill ask you to copy from usb to hdd 0 says yes.. et voila
