    ok so i have been FTPing game backups between my ps3's external hd and my pc.... so i was wondering if i could just plug the external usb HD into the PC directly and copy the directory to the hard drive then reconnect it to the ps3...... would the backups still work? i do know the correct directory paths and such......

    Yes, you can transfer back ups using an external storage device. Just plug in to PC, copy the game's folder, then plug in to PS3, and transfer it through a file manager.

    i would still need to use a file manager even if i put it in the proper /games folder and such...?

    No, just put the games folder in the "GAMES" or what ever the folders name is, make sure to properly disconnect the external hard drive from your PC.
