do manual game updates "work" ?

hello. a noob here.

i have some backups on me drive that I would like to update manually (since there is no internet connectivity on me ps3)

so:
- downloaded updates from PS3PKG
- put them on a usb stick
- run Install Package Files from and installed the updates from there

so my questions really is:

- is this the correct way to get the game updates applied ? (in case there is no internet connectivity)
- how can I tell if a game has been updated ? I don't see anything visual on the screen

2. go to game data folder (top of game xmb) look for the game then press triangle and select information, you will see the game version and compare it to the update you made
