Thanks everybody for all your responses.

I think my main question is answered that the disc is not used for actual game play and all data is loaded from hard disk. So that will definitely save my laser.
And yeah, the idea of keeping a cheap disc in the drive is good.

I have some other questions, I read in some other threads that...

    1. some games may try to read the security sector from the disc, so I guess in this case only the original and same disc (not just any) has to be present in the drive

    2. there is some sort of key in the blueray drive that is checked in some games. this key is for the drive itself and not the game. So to play such games, any disc can be present in the drive. Also, for this to work only blueray logic board should be ok, though the laser could be dead as the key comes from the logic board not the disc.

    3. rest of the games which do not check security sector or the blueray drive key can be run disc-less.

Also, I heard lot of people with broken blueray drive, I guess they must be broken/dead laser and not the logic board. I guess broken logic board cases must be very minimal.

    Is my understanding correct?

Yea the board death is much rarer. If your ps3 takes in disks and reads dvd/cd but not blu ray then you need a laser. If it doesn't take in or gets stuck then logic board.

Eminded: where the hell are you getting the 90$ price tag? A laser is like 40$ and the whole drive is around 60$.

But I guess you can not just update any drive. It must go to Sony and they may charge much higher. As it contains their secret key.

You need the drive to make a backup of your legally acquired games since the BD disc is encrypted and only the PS3 can decrypt it...
