I have just discovered that two of my games have duplicate files, and I'm wondering if we can recover a lot of disk space from the backups.

Basically all the files in the hdd installs are copied from the backup so potentially there is duplication with all games that install data to the hdd, and as such, potentially a lot of space to be recovered.

Example: Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising has a Big File (>4Gb) called ps3_000.nfs in the USRDIR of the game backup and has the same file in USRDIR\PS3Cache. I have searched up on this and found on another site that these files are identical, (MD5 and something? something? comparison checks done!).

Now this big file is also copied to the Game Data (HDD Install files) so the game is taking up 12Gb where if should potentially only take up about 4Gb so here's what I've done:

I deleted the file from the game data folder and the USRDIR\PS3Cache folder from the game backup and replaced both with a shortcut to the real file in the USRDIR folder using multiMAN.

I haven't tested the game fully, just started the game up and played a bit of the first mission without issue so it seems like a runner.

The other game is Operation Flashpoint Red River which has exactly the same file duplicated.

I would love to hear what others think of this or if they've tried with other games or even if this topic has been posted before please point me to it etc.

Funny fact: main game file ps3_000.nfs is used TWICE in two different folders. And the size of this file is almost 4Gb.
Yes, I've checked these two files - with CRC32, MD5 and bits comparision. They are identical.
not posted here, but it was on a different site. OP from that thread has examined lots of games and found a lot of them to have uneccessary files

Yep, that's what I came across also, unrelated but helpful to what I'm talking about.

I don't have this game but interesting idea I will try this later. you might wanna give PS3 Game Ripper a try also. I always delete the UPDATE folder and dig through the files and delete non English localizations.

And what if you try this with ALL the files that are installed? I guess all the installationfiles are just duplicates placed on your PS3 to make things load faster.

For anyone interested, this thread now has more details and I'm going there instead now. http://psx-scene.com/forums/f192/sha...does-do-88596/ (Shadow copy in Multiman - what does it do & how does it do it?)
