I was wondering if its possible to play backups off an external HDD on CFW 3.55. I have the original 60gb Fat PS3, so if the only way to play backups is to FTP them to the main harddrive then I'll have to invest in a larger HDD. Thanks!

I would also like to know if it is possible with any of the current methods to use an external HDD to play backups on 3.55CFW?
One thing to the OP, you can probably copy to an external, then use a file manager to copy from external USB to internal PS3 HDD. Meaning FTP is not the 'only' way to get files to the internal HDD.
My main reason why I wanted an external HDD was more for convenience so I can switch between PS3s with ease (i have 2, one at home one at dorm.) and not have to copy over everything each time I want to play on a different one, although your idea does sound like a good one to go around FTP, if i ever have to.
Yes. In fact you can do it with flash cards if your PS3 supports them. Here are the mount points:
dev_usb000 (left port)
dev_usb001
dev_usb002 (only on fats)
dev_usb003 (only on fats)
flash cards:
dev_cf
dev_ms
dev_sd
EDIT: I mixed up the location of the USB ports. dev_usb000 is right most port.

Thanks C! Considering switching over to 3.55 CFW(currently on 3.55 OFW), I have a hacked psp and love the convenience of having backups rather than switching around UMDs all the time, plus the homebrew is so much better than what the PSP is capable of by default. Just trying to do some research before I make the big decision and switch. This is a big plus definitly, the homebrew I'm already seeing is wonderful, plus I saw that a wii/GC emulator is coming over(thats amazing!)
Thanks for the help both of you, really appreciate it.
so what homebrew app do i use to burn and then launch games? ive tried multiman, and have succesfull gotten the files on my hdd, but cannot launch. It just sends me right back to the XMB menu.
Is there a Tutorial On How To Do THis?

He's on 3.55 by the sound of things, so no app_home or mounting for him. Unless he has a factory 3.41 or before, in which case he can downgrade as of the last hour or so.
