Bypass/skip (necessary?) data install for games?
Bypass/skip (necessary?) data install for games? –
My HDD is slowly filling up and seeing as ALL the data needed for the game to run is already on the HDD itself, is there a way to skip the data install? Surely you can just replace the path of the install data with that on the disc backup itself?
on 80% of games yes, it involves using multiman and the shadow copy function, and just replace anything u see on the installed data with a shadow copy of the game files, i gained like 50gb on my hdd that way, but i found something weird, for example i already know how to manually make the data install for Heavy Rain, but one day i took it out of the hdd, so had to delete the shadow copied files, and when i created the install folders the game still told me that i needed the free space to do the instalation, but after i freed up the space, the game booted and didnt ask for installation.
Could you please post a link to a tutorial or explain how I can make a shadow copy of the data install? Thanks.

to do a shadow copy u need to highlight the folder on the right window and press R3, u need to do it manually, copy everything the install data has, its not just pressing a button and done.
for example Heavy Rain installs on devhdd0/game/bcus98164data/, inside u will find 3 files
and the folder USRDIR/, and if u notice all the files on this folder are the same from the game USRDIR/GameData/, so u move or delete the previous folder and do a shadow copy of the gamedata folder and change its name to USRDIR, this is simple, other games may require u to copy multiple folders, or single files, or deleting unnecesarry files, and sometimes theres 1 or 2 files that only the install puts there, so u need to put them back after doing the shadow copy(considering u moved the original folder to somewhere else first), and when you are done u can test if everything is fine (run the game) and then delete the original files of the installation.
Hmm, seems quite involved.
So effectively, this is what you would do:
- Copy the data install folder somewhere as a safety precaution.
- Observe what files/folders are present in the D.I (data install) folder
- Then delete the data install folder.
- Shadow copy the USRDIR/gamedata from the backup folder.
- Change the name of the shadow copied folder to USRDIR.
- Profit! (I mean test the game to see if it works and if so, delete the copy you made in the first step.)
I'll give it a try and report back. Thanks for the help.
it does work for like 90% of games, the only ones i found that u cant do it are capcom games and NFS shift 1/2, others like MGS4 u can recover half of the install, and the other half from deleting some files the game decompress to install.
