Back ups off external - help

I really hate to create a thread, but nothing else has helped.
i really want to run backups off my ps3 but just can't get it to work. tbh, i just want to be able to say i did it more than anything right now since i can't figure it out.
I've read a lot of threads and tried a few programs, but i can't get anything to run off my external drive.
So, any simple guide or anything will help.

I have searched the forums, but that's about it that keeps me above the noob status.

First, tell us what firmware are you on. Is it 3.55 or have you downgraded to a 3.41 and know how to jailbreak.

I thought i needed to give more info. I'm sure if i was 3.41 i'd have no issues, but i'm not.
I'm on 3.55 (geo).
Also, i noticed my ps3 (80 gig fat with bc) labels the usb as 002, 003, 000 and 006. That is the order from left to right...
