I'm pretty sure you can just replace the HDD and format it... no need to do all this updating crap... or am I wrong? If so explain.
I've formatted my 80GB HDD already on CFW and it did it just fine. Shouldn't be a problem with a different HDD.
Problem is they've been downgraded. If you read what I wrote, when you downgrade a 3.55 console you have to use a modified 3.41 firmware file that reports as 3.56. So, if you upgrade the HDD and try to provide it with 3.41 OFW, it will say it's not valid and will want a 3.56 firmware. Well, we all know what 3.56 will do to this console. So, he'll need to downgrade again to 3.41 OFW before upgrading the HDD.

If by chance you have a 256mb nand in your phat you don't have to do anything except put the new drive in and let it format. I did and 3 seconds after hitting the power button I was at the xmb with the new drive.
I love that it holds the whole firmware in nand.
Ok thank you just one more question, what folders should I backup via FTP Manager ?
I just installed a 1TB HD in my ps3 80g fat. I used backup utility to backup my ps3 80 gig hd to a external hd. I installed the new hd, when I turned on the ps3, it need updated, I put ofw 3.55 on thumb drive, pressed start and select buttons at the same time. Ps3 will format new hd, and install 3.55. Than I update to Kmeaw 3.55 and multiman. Everything works great with all my games backed up on my ps3 and plenty of room to spare.

Anyone upgraded to these? Which would be more suitable for a slim 120?

If one is on kmeaw and changes the internal hdd, what could go wrong if you insert an USB stick with 3.55 kmeaw when asked by the system?
OK here is a little walkthrough I did,
PS3 was on 3.50 downgrade to 3.41 via ps3break usb dongle.
After inserting new hdd it asked for update 3.41 or higher. I tried 3.41 OFW but it stopped at 44% and sent me back at begging (press START + SELECT and tried again with same result). So I tried 3.50 OFW and it works ok now, disk is successfully installed and all works great. So now I will go to whole downgrade and jailbrake procedure again ...
greets & tnx to all!
