Ever since the issue with the game backup of "Assassins Creed Brotherhood" -- that if you try to load it without a disc, it will mess up with your HDD directory and corrupt some files.
I've been editing the PARAM.SFO file for any game that requires a disc to play with PS3 SFO Editor v0.80 (Download) and I add a hint (O) in the title of the game, so when I load it with any backup manager, it will say now say the title of the game plus my hint (O): (see picture of Gaia Manager attached below)
Assassins Creed Brotherhood (O)
Call Of Duty: Black OPs (O)
and any other game you have that require a disc in order to play...
(O) = Need Disc - I wish I knew how to make that hint into the pattern of a disk, so it would be more apparent than just (O).
BTW, I don't mark the games that don't require a disk. Obviously if it doesn't have (O) in the title of the game, I should not worry.
Patched Mode?
Also, if your disk requires to be in Patched Mode, you can also add (P) to hint you when you need to apply it. And if the game requires a disc and be also in patched mode, then you should just add (O) (P). -- And keep in mind that these are just hints, you still have to manually insert a disc or enable patch mode in order for the game to play.
Grand Tourismo 5 (P)
(P) = Patched Mode
P.S. When you are editing and then Saving with the PS3 SFO Editor, be sure that when you click SAVE, it is actually saving the file in the correct directory where it should. Seems that the app only remembers where it last saved a file, meaning if you load the file from another directory, it will try to save it in the last directory where it last saved, instead of the most recent directory where you loaded the new file. I think this is what causes many noobs confusion, because they might be saving the file in the wrong place.
P.S.S. I used to be able to remember which games needed a disc, because they are a few that do, but now with massive large HDDs to my disposal and a cool USB HUB, it's easy to forget. So this trick helps me remember to make sure to load a disc before trying to execute the game backup. Because (as you may already know) sometimes if a disc is not loaded, we get a black screen, and then the PS3 sometimes reboots forcing us to JB the PS3 all over again to continue. Good thing some games that require a disc, just sends you back to the XMB if you forget to insert a disc. But there are a few that don't play nice.
So before putting a game back up on my HDD, I check the compatible lists below, and if they report a disc is required, I make sure to alter the PARAM.SFO file game title before going forward.
Here at the two compatible lists I always check:
1 - PS3 Working and Non-Working Games.
2 - PSJCL.com
