You can update without any worries, but if you don't want to see the udpate messages, either turn off your network connection, or do a custom setup on it and set your DNS server address to 1.1.1.1

With the E3 you can throw any HEX for any board at it and it will use it.
The spoof FW's i wouldn't reccomend. However Hermes v4b is the best payload for games and homebrew, PL3 is aimed more at developers

Im using the latest 3.55 Spoof FW from: e3 card reader, new generation ps3 chip with mulit-function
-> New 2in1 firmware, support 3.55SPOOF, and simplify free psgroove usage

Instead of Gaia (i used before) I use Open Manager right now. Everything works fine with this one. Gaia is nice but I had some problems with some games. You can have Gaia and Open Manager on your PS3 - no problem at all.

Yeah, right. It was just the quote of the e3 page.
Itīs about renaming the hex files... To make it easier - I did not get whats easier now but of course its totaly confusing
    Thats what the readme says:

*before you need change hermers hex name into h.hex, now change into free.hex
before you need change kakaroto hex name into k.hex, now change into free.hex*

ehhhm - yeah - easy *ggg*
