Sounds like your activating the fan test.

I actually was activating the fan test.

Thanks to everyone who suggested a fix. The problem was my stupidity level. I assumed when I read you turn it off by the back and then turn it on and press eject, they meant to turn it on by the back. I neglected to actually turn the ps3 on.... I'm sure this qualifies for some sort of award!
