I managed to get my hands on a Maximus AVR 1.2 using the new PIC chips.

Design: This version comes shipped in a nice sturdy enclosure with a hole to put it into programming mode

The Guts: The components on the board are well assembled, nothing cheap here

Flashing: I had to do some digging around for this one but i found a modified version of HIDLoader from Maximus. This requires you to have the following components installed:

Download details: Microsoft .NET Framework 4 (Web Installer)
Download details: Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x86)

Plug the device into your your PC and press the little button to kick it into bootloader mode

Launch the HIDLoader.exe file and it should recognize the device. Load the hex file and program the device.

Booted up with no problems at all with the hermes v4b file i used.

Well the cases in this batch were printed before Maximus found out he could not source enough of the Atmel chips.

Do you or anyone know anything about PL3 for this chip, the pic 32kb? Has anyone tried? Or does anyone know what happens when the PL3 maximus is put on to the 32kb? Do the leds, and break work still? The Bootloader??

Sorry for a noob qn as I am going to JB.

Whats the difference between using this dongle and the very earlier versions of JB on the calculator, 6 axis and HTC handsets?

even if you put a corrupted hex. you can put a new bootloader by holding the button while connecting it

I've messed up a 16kb, and a 32kb allready from the 1.2 loading the wrong hex files, and not being able to update.

But, I decided to just put the newest PL3 on my maximus 1.2 16kb, and that seems to work. I use the hermes 4b on the 32kb until we get better support.

But I repeat. I have messed up both version of the maximus 1.2, by loading the wrong hexes!

Gotta say my vote goes to the 16kb atmel 1.2 board! And VGC Repairs for support! Linked under seach forum!
