Hey there, I figured I would share this with you all. Thanks to a little program by Pika25 (and regex, thank you Notepad++ ^^), I managed to switch around all the pointers in the STRING_DIC.SO and then reinsert it into the string.svo. And wouldn't you know it, it worked - the menu is now (almost) fully translated, minus the added PS3 stuff, naturally. The 360 skit titles are translated as well, but NPC talk, the story and the skits aren't (they're in the scenario.dat, and I have no idea what to do with that...).

I took the liberty of uploading the modified string.svo here. Do with it what you will . You will need to backup your game to replace the string.svo, and I swear to god, if you pirate this game I will personally come to your home and destroy you.

By the way, I haven't tested this extensively, so I don't know how stable this actually is - but since I only changed the pointers around, it should be pretty stable.

This is nowhere near a replacement for the upcoming full patch (a huge thank you to the team doing that, by the way!), of course, but I think I'm not the only one who's anxious to play the game, and English menus are definitely a great help.

    Enjoy .

EDIT: I added some screenshots, sorry for the bad image quality, the only camera I own is in my cell phone and quite frankly, it sucks.

Interesting, especially the full translation patch.
So they just took the English text from the 360 version?

By the way, in case you did not know (which I doubt):
The PS3 version's bonus material, which does not exist on the 360, was already translated in the 360 version, although it's not accessible.
I heard there were some files on the 360 disc that contain the English text.
So this means it could simply get ripped from the 360 disc as well.

However, I guess you guys have already known about that.

P.S. It seems that the patch is almost done anyway...
If you want to sort your PSN games alphabetically, feel free to read my guide:
(Should also work for Signed PS3 PKGs!)

I seriously doubt I could access those files, my programming skills aren't worth a crap, the only reason I could even do this simple menu patch is Pika25's tool (there's a link somewhere around here). Thank you for the info, though.

The full patch isn't actually close to finished, there will be several more stages of translation verification once the initial translation is complete. The release date is expected to be April at the very earliest.

By the way, I'm in no way affiliated with the Graces Translation Team (the guy's who're doing Vesperia). In fact, I just used the tools one of their members happened to post on the internet ^^. The work they're doing is orders of magnitude more awesome than what I did .

    It's quite easy, actually:

    • Insert the Vesperia disc into your PS3
    • Backup the disc to the HDD with your favorite Backup Manager (I used Gaia)
    • Navigate to the folder you backed up the game to with your FTP program (I used BlackboxFTP)
    • Replace the string.svo in the USRDIR folder with the modified string.svo.
    • Start the game backup
    • Enjoy mostly English menus

    I hope this helps.

I've updated my patch (the link is in the first post), for those of you who're interested. I've romanized/translated all the new Artes, Skills, Titles and Equipment (but not the new Key Items), but I only translated Skill descriptions (thanks to the Aselia wiki; don't expect perfect English or line alignment for the descriptions, I didn't have time to properly test that). The Arte, Title and Equipment descriptions are still in Japanese, but they're not exactly vital to gameplay, so I think you'll be able to deal ^^.

One more thing: The random NPC chatter is also in the string.svo, but it doesn't have an English equivalent unlike the rest of the strings. If someone wants to go to the trouble of inserting the English 360 NPC chatter into the Japanese string.svo, they're welcome to try.

    Have fun .
