I am a proud ps3 owner and I must say I love the scene but I have to say that this scene is dying... since the devs isn't going to stick their neck out for people anymore (ahem Geohot, Failoverflow , Graf Chokolo) well you get the Idea without all the key players and the games keep on requiring the newer firmwares. I really dont think that the 3.60 keys are hard to encrypt but I do think that without that talent (ahem Geohot, Failoverflow) the scene has taken a serious downfall. I dont care for a 3.60 cfw fw since I have a jailbroken ps3. We dont need a new cfw all we need is the keys but I am not a dev so I dont know what it takes to hack the ps3 like them. But like I said without the key players have Sony finally won?

But in all seriousness, it's not dying. I've seen a wealth of progress lately. Cobra usb getting close to being fully cracked, QA flags being cracked, some very nice emulators (n64 is on it's way). There's even a method to downgrade from 3.6x to a CFW! Granted it's incredibly tricky and requires lots of technical know how. You have to think about who runs the scene: Hackers. Without them there wouldn't be a scene (literally!). Most of them really don't require / don't care about 3.6x CFW because it's of no use to real hackers. The only use it really has is more piracy, IMHO (I'm cynical, but it's a valid point I think). The people who really care about homebrew and linux and what a console scene should be either A) have a CFW PS3 already or B) have the means to get one. You have to remember that devs are people too. They do what makes them happy first without really caring about what everybody else (i.e. the people that sit on their asses and whine about anything and everything) think.

You can't bring graf and fail overfl0w and geohot into this equation I don't think. They had stifling legal action brought against them. I'm sure it wasn't their choice to not develop anymore; it was a necessity.

Oh. And Sony didn't win, nor can they win. Console has been hacked, which means they lost. They succeeded in scaring developers and making some of them unable to help, but in the process they lost a fair amount of loyal customers. So no, I don't think sony won.

if the rumor of Sony stating production of PS4 at the end of 2011 is true, then --I don't wanna say PS3 scene is dead but-- it's been stopped. it was fun while it lasted though.

Now while having the 3.56+ keys would inevitably lead to piracy, it is a certain fact that inevitably this scene will die without them one day. A successful scene needs fresh blood from time to time, and only the most motivated (and probably already involved) hackers can be bothered to downgrade from 3.6X+ to a cfw at the moment. Without fresh blood you wont get innovation and fresh homebrew ideas. Over time dev's will fade away from lack of interest and we wont get anything neat anymore! For example, Scogger HD is a fun and simple homebrew that almost any amateur coder could make. We need fresh amateur coders so we can continue to get cool stuff like that, as opposed to just the hardcore devs working on important but boring stuff behind the scenes haha.

Also, some hackers actual like to game too, and dont really have the disposable income to buy multiple PS3's, therefore 3.6X+ fw's will be needed by them to play awesome new games. I for one cannot afford multiple PS3's and seriously hope somebody exploits whatever fw is needed for Uncharted 3 haha >.>; I dont want to lose my homebrew! :/

Or... code it yourself and stop expecting everybody else to go out and make fun games for you. Making a game is almost as fun as playing it (and often times more fun).

Sounds just like the PSP, even though releasing the root keys didn't really do much to revive the PSP scene.
Will the scene die without the npdrm keys? Not all by themselves but it does greatly hinder interest in it.
Piracy is already rampant on the PS3. Did you hear that Mathelieu? (your the only one left with enough talent, why do you care so much?)
We are only talking about retail disc-less PSN games and some disc based games that have decryption issues.
If you have problems with that there is always Rebug CFW that will allow you to license, right off Sony's servers, many disk-less PSN games without any DRM headaches.
The most important thing is bringing in new scene fans, keeping the old ones and opening more consoles with cfw and or downgraders.
Without progress in decryption of current firmware and software the scene will die.

Oh my science, THE PS3 SCENE IS NOT DYING whatsoever!!!!!!! There's so much potential to this machine and we realize this every day with each addition/update! (Not to mention all the free shit you already have) The "heart" of this machine does not lie in those keys, but in the overall system itself and it's abilities, I believe.
Plus, is there 1 game that you REALLY wanted to play for PS3 that we couldn't!?? Mind Portal 2, those exclusive titles we really want to play SOMEHOW always develop a fix. ...and if you can't take it, buy yourself an xbox and flash it.

This obviously was not the major PS2-esque 'still alive years after its death sentence' machine that Sony might have been banking on - perhaps that's why they're intent on prematurely killing it. The main CPU is just too weak (oh, BTW - Themaister just confirmed this - an Apple PowerMac G4 at 700MHz - out-order - runs bSNES TWO TIMES SLOWER than the PS3. Allow that to sink in - a 700MHz PPC out-order CPU out of the box runs code exactly two times slower than a 3.2GHz in-order PPC core. That is downright pathetic) and it requires too much programming trickery to get anything out of it. I can understand why developers want to hop onto the next-gen as soon as possible - when you have to target the lowest common denominator machine for any game, graphics are obviously going to be downgraded across all platforms - that is PC, 360 and PS3. Because PC is a non-lucrative gaming market - this has been the sole reason why most PC versions of games don't look that much better than their 360/PS3 brethren apart from higher res and higher anti-aliasing.
Downright pathetic? That's a bloody understatement! In fact, it's absolutely embarrassing considering the fact that the PS3 was out since 2006, but then again, it doesn't help when creating programs based on the PS3's hardware architecture is much more than just a pain in the bleeding a-hole! Seriously though, what a waste of "potential power" for the PS3 (if any that is), and hence it makes me want to ask the following question: what's the point of having a supposedly "ridiculously powerful" processor if it cannot be optimised properly due to factors like lack of familiarity with its architecture and so on?

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong!
