MGS 4 Question –
10-23-2010,07:12 AM
I have MGS4 and it works fine from internal but i would like to play it over external because it takes up a lot of space (30 gb). The only thing that is preventing me from doing it is that there is a one big file that is 12GB, however the files name is demo.dat located in ps3_game/usrdir/mgs/demo.dat. Sounds like i dont need the file to play the game or is this file a must have? Anyone have any experiences
I try it out anyways and let you know what happen but first gotta FTP it to my PC.
Edit: Did not work, loaded up to new game screen and then froze

demo.dat is all the motion capture + voiceover data for the ingame cutscenes. If it works anything like it does in MGS2/3, the game stores pointers to the files in demo.dat in the stage.dat files, which are encrypted. You'd have to do some serious modifications to the filesystem code in the EBOOT to get this running of an external drive. Best bet is to save up and get a 500GB internal for games like this.

Removing Demo.dat loads the game but freezes at option "new game
I would love to get a 500GB internal but I dont think I'm gonna need one when custom firmware comes out, im hoping for ntsc/ufs/ or ext3 support
