yes, my devices are PIC18F2455, so since i could not get it to autodetect i selected it from the list.

unfortunately, selecting it from the list still doesn't make it program the chip.

i really don't know what to do at this point as i have tried everything and the serial programmer just won't reflash my devices.

You can't get it to erase either? Sometimes hardflashing payloads doesn't work for me, but hard flashing original ones from Patrick and just bootloader worl for me.

    Has it ever worked Jake?

I'm curious what causes this I have tested on 3 computers. XP and windows 7 32bit. They all work.

If autodetect doesn't say its a 2455 (or whatever) then you don't have a proper connection. If it says Unknown it really means that it couldn't read *anything* => bad/incorrect connection

from what i can determine, the serial port needs to be integrated with the motherboard. my pc has an add-on PCIe card with the serial port.

i'm curious to know if your 3 computers have the serial port built into the mb.

Yesterday I tried to program the P3Free on another computer an old IBM thinkcentre (that makes a total of 4 computer that won't program my brick P3Free). As soon as I plug in the USB.. the computer says USB exceed the voltage (or something like that). I smell something burning.. then look at the ribbon that connects the programmer to the p3free.. the ribbon was burn. I guess no more trying to program the thing. I think I might have gotten a defective Programmer. BTW When I plug in the programmer, an orange light light up then fade away on the programmer. The P3free does not light up. The Programmer is detected.. but not the PIC.. i also try the manual selection.. does not work either.

same thing happened to me. i have ALOT of air circulation in my box, so i smelled it rather quickly and unplugged it. i thought it was beginning to burn my usb port out. i didn't leave it plugged in long enough to see what exactly was burning though.

point being is that the serial programmer seems to have issues with certain serial port setups.
