my Review of Pic-Fun(a.k.a P3Free+/P3FreePlus)
for those asking what's the difference between P3Free and Pic-Fun(P3Free+), refer to these images.
LEFT: Pic-Fun(P3Free+) RIGHT: P3Free
so where do we start? i was chosen to receive the review kit by patrick(thank you) and it was sent to me from HongKong.
the noticeable difference of Pic-Fun to its older brother P3Free is that aside from the button you press when upgrading, there is a switch that you could move to put RC6 to GND(used for other schematics). And the leds are now inside the dongle. (refer to pics above)
the first thing i did was plug it into my laptop and test it for upgrading. the dongle came to me with a demo firmware(hex/payload) so it still doesn't have the capability to jailbreak my PS3. :wow:
but don't fret, it's really easy to upgrade. :D
Fact: Pic-Fun(P3Free+/P3FreePlus) is preflashed with USBHID bootloader for upgrading via USB.
to upgrade the Pic-Fun via USB, just follow the steps in their SITE.
Note: when upgrading via USB, make sure the switch is on the far left side, away from the button
For hex/payloads, you can use THESE hex. I tested all hex that is in that post and it works. But since Pic-Fun comes with a programmer, you could hard flash other hex that fits its specifications. (beware of flashing different hex for I have no idea what would happen if you flashed the wrong one)
for hard flashing, you need to have a programmer that has FPC port, better yet get their programmer and follow THESE steps.
Note: you cannot use usb-to-serial to hard flash it since you will not get enough power to program.
okay now we're set!
i simply followed the steps needed to jailbreak my PS3(slim) and unsurprisingly it works. (never doubted it)
tried playing 3D Dot Game Heroes discless using PL3 that i downloaded from iLLNESS' thread, and it works.
so let me end this review with the PROS and CONS that I personally experienced with this dongle.
- Support is SUPERB!
- up-to-date hex/payloads (get the latest hex/payloads from iLLNESS' thread)
- after-sales support (Pic-Fun has a yellow sticker to know if you have an original Pic-Fun)
- easy to upgrade (you don't have to be a rocket science genius to upgrade it)
- can be used for other schematic (using the switch) [please do not ask me to elaborate on this for i will not]
- i dunno, unless a mandatory payload comes that needs more than 24Kb then that would be a problem.
Acknowledgement: i would like to thank patrick for giving me the opportunity to review their product.
Disclaimer: I do not work for P3Free and same goes to iLLNESS that was mentioned in this review. :shhh:
