Is your Modnation Racers stable? Game version, payload, loader (discless or not)?

I've had a lot of trouble using Modnation Racers on my jailbroken PS3 Slim.
I have tried backing it up from the UK version bundled with my PS3 (and unofficially I have also tried downloading a version to see if it played better, but its the same, so I deleted that again).

I have:
PS3 Slim at 3.41
Jailbroken with iPod Touch - primarily I've used PL3 versions. I have only tried Hermes v4b once, but that didn't seem to work for me (backup managers didn't work properly to "emulate" the desired game disc but kept showing the actual bluray disc in the drive.


My problem:
Modnation Racers install fine using Gaia manager (1.04.1 and also 1.03 tested previously). I can typically play the game at version 1.00, but sometimes at random times it crashes/freezes and I have to do a hard reset.

Some days ago I tried reinstalling it, and I could load it up and drive around in Modspot at 1.00, at 1.02, 1.03 and 1.04. I never got to test 1.05 that night before going to sleep. The next morning I tried starting the game at 1.04, which booted fine the night before, but then it just froze at the loading circle.


I just reinstalled it again. I played the introductory race and was later sent to Modspot. It idled there while I was surfing, and when I wanted to race, it had frozen again.

By the way, I have deleted save data and user created contents.




What are your experiences? Have any of you experienced problems with the Eur version or maybe the US version, which you have fixed?

What are your experiences regarding the payload? are you using Hermes v4b, or maybe PL3? If PL3 which specific version then? no-unauth-syscall, default 3.41, 3.41 with PSN + 3.50 spoof?

Are you using Gaia? Are you playing discless or do you use a random BD to play it with disc?

Can you update it to 1.05 (or maybe even 1.06) just by accepting the game patches at game boot?

I am really getting tired of this unstable game. Sometimes I can race around a lot, and sometimes I barely get to play a single race.

I think it's a bug in PL3 payload, I've read it in another thread. I use Hermes v4b with Open Manager 1.17.2, and zero problems with that game. Keep in mind it has painfully long loading times.

Thanks for your reply. Do you run the game in patched mode or normal from OM? I am not used to OM and not sure what patched mode really means. I havent been at the scene for that long.


The game just crashed for me again. A completely fresh install:
- Newest PL3 payload from 24/11 found on iPhoneLinux wiki page.
- Installed using Gaia 1.04.1 disc less

I raced the introductory race, edited a racer in Modspot, (was bothered with a Save data corrupt, retry? question), raced the second race in career and then after another edit of a figure, it froze on the way to Modspot.



Regarding Hermes v4b, then I am having trouble running it on my iPod Touch. Maybe I should take the time to try and use my Ti-89 calculator and see if it is better.

My /app_home/PS3_GAME/ folder is just grey and has the name of the selected game. And trying to run it gives 8001003A error.

If I put a disc in and try to select a different game in either Open Manager or Gaia, the XMB shows the /app_home/PS3_GAME/ with the desired Game name, but the background and movie/sound is from the inserted game disc.


Is it incorrectly compiled? Or should I just stick with PL3 for my iPod, although I am having stability issues.

I don't know much about compiling and if I can make my own payload file for the iPod.

Patched mode is for controller issues (doesn't apply to Modnation). You should get a good compile of Hermes v4b for your device. Look for it or ask politely for it in the Ipod thread (I assume you are using Rockbox):

No sadly. Rockbox is not supported on iPod Touch, only iPod Nano's and Classic/Mini's and such.
I am using Openiboot on my iPod Touch together with Zaxtron front end right now.
Hermes v4b was however not supported on Zaxtron and I had to replace Zaxtron with the Hermes. It jailbreaked almost alright, but the backup games wouldn't work.

I will consider finding someone who can compile a working Hermes. But it is still my impressions that a lot of people play Modnation Racers with PL3 without any issues. But I may be mistaken.

I know quite a few people who gave up on running Modnation Racers with PL3. Hermes is the only payload thats 100% stable with Modnation and I've done quite a bit of testing with different devices (rockbox, teensy etc) and payloads.

I use Hermes v4 with Open Manager 1.17.2

The game works fine with me, i used hermes 4b and pl3 payloads no difference.
but i have mount it with my maximus v1 usb stick. Why don't you buy such a stick, it is really cheap and is alot easier to use with your ps3.

Seems to only be with this one.
I have also had a crash in XMB just after selecting the game in Gaia. And I have been required to rebuild database in safe mode a couple of times also.

Tekken 6 and Vanquish seems to play fine. I didn't try with Uncharted 2, as I got started in non-jailbreak mode an decided to continue that way in order to avoid any instability issues. But I have consided backin up my save games and testing Uncharted 2 in backup-mode also.

I will definately buy some kind of stick, but it is difficult to figure out which one is the best for the price.
The iPod Touch requires a lot of timing issues and runs out of battery, so I'm definately keen on getting something simpler :-) But I haven't been much in a hurry. Also I hope to see some progress on the stability issues with PL3. Kakaroto made some changes which should make it possible to track some of the crash reasons in Modnation Racers. Maybe stability will be improved.

Now to the update:
I can sometimes start the game and actually race quite a few laps, sometimes barely a single one, and very often the game wont even boot.
That happened at patch 1.05. The 1.05 update didn't give any different behaviour than 1.00.

Since I was so annoyed, I realised how simple it is to use the Ti-89 Titanium calculator for jailbreaking: I followed this tutorial.

Now I have just played Modnation Racers with Hermes v4b with 3.50 spoof. No signs of instability.
I am very glad that I tested the calculator.
Also the calculator jailbreak is a lot faster to turn on and off. I'm not too worried that it will run out of batteries every second day.
