Hi guys. I recently bought a PS3. It's a 60 GB BC. It's a launch systems, and the firmware has never been updated.

I need to know where to start with hacking, and then jailbreaking?

What are some must haves/do's and dont's?

Is there a "for dummies guide"? Anything??

I want cool themes, and movies, and SNES emulator... All that shit!! I want the hot stuff!

Where do I start man, I'm so ready to do this!

Well, I will tell you exactly where I started when I bought my launch 60gb. I immediately took it apart, and put new thermal paste on the GPU and CPU before it YLOD'ed itself. Also, since you bought it used, it may have never been cleaned out, so you might want to take care of that. This is the most important piece of advice I can offer to you. It would be horrible for you to go though buying a JB device, adding a bunch of games onto your HDD, patches and saves, etc. then for it to YLOD.

Secondly, you need to determine where you'd like to store most of your games and what type of games you plan on purchasing and backing up. I bought a 500gb internal drive, mainly because I own a few 'internal backup only' games, which would have easily eaten up the 60gb hdd. If you want to use an external, there are plenty of options out there for you, either portable or the plug-in-to-the-wall type. Since you have 4 USB ports, some of the portable ones take two usb plug ins, so it shouldn't be a problem anyways.

Finally, you need to determine your financial situation when looking at what JB device to buy. You could buy your own programmable device (AVR, teensy, etc), use an ipod or something else that has been porteed, or buy a "name brand" device managed by a group of individuals (ps3 break, x3max, etc)

These are good steps to start with, and I am sure once you answer these questions, either by yourself or posting back on here- many other users will be able to help. There's a lot of thinking to do than just going ahead and JB'ing your console.

Very helpful post bro. Thanks for the advice. Especially about the cleaning. It seems rather hot when I only played a little Tekken on it.

Jailbreaking is something I want to do on the later end. I'm looking to buy one. I see them going for 25 bucks now. Can you recommend a site?

How about homebrews and emulators? Where do I start with that?

Personally, I prefer the Maximus AVR. It is very user friendly, and I received excellent support when I couldn't get it working on my Windows 7 (which they provided me with the x64 drivers and it worked right away). I bought my Maximus AVR from VGC Repairs, for about $38 shipped after using a coupon. If you want to buy something cheaper, you can, but I can confirm the support from the Maximus AVR team through personal experience. But, you can look at reviews of current JB devices Reviews - PSX PS2 PS3 Scene Hacking Modchip & Jailbreak Community there.

And, for your second question regarding homebrew and emulators, I hate to be the one, but you should just search the forums. Just read around, that's how I found mine. I am not sure if there is one post that lists all the top applications, but because so many pop up, it would be rather hard to keep control of. There is a very good SNES emulator (SNES9x) out right now. Also, other fun, yet not many, homebrew apps such as a maze generator. Theres also other applications you can use like FTP server by blackbox, or Comgenie's Awesome File Manager.

Just take some time and look through the forums, and be sure to read people's reviews on certain items. It helps when seeing both sides of the story.

    ^^

Thanks. I'll be sure to check out those links. The lowest price doesn't always equal the best.

When it comes to Homebrews, emulators and such. I don't even know how to install them. Do I load it up to a USB, then to my PS3 or is it done within my PS3? Meh... I try looking around again. Lots of content, but just not sure how to install.

The homebrew installs just like any other thing you will do. You'll load it on a normal usb (FAT32 formatted) stick. Once jailbroken, you will see an "Install Package" folder on your XMB under game. From there, you can select which you would like to install.

OK, since I'm on the old FM. I was thinking about installing linux. Is there a way to keep Linux on and update FW? Does FM spoofing work?

I didn't know my PS3 had to be JB to run homebrews. I thought JB was just for running games.

Correct me if I'm wrong but none of the hacks and JB's can be kept if one updates to the latest FW? If I play heavily online I probably shouldn't even bother huh?
