Two drives, one for Homebrew, one for PSN?

I assume that you've replied NO each time, so that one of your drives still is on the old firmware (either 3.41 or 3.55).

Did you try making a system recovery boot with the 'old' firmware drive in the console, and the corresponding old firmware PUP on a USB drive ?

Possibly OFW 3.60 puts a stop even to that method, but originally it was supposed to allow any console to recover the firmware it came with originally, in case of failed upgrades etc. So if you haven't tried it yet, it is at least worth trying.

I don't think it will ever become practical to 'switch' back and forth between different firmwares, but it would be valuable just to be able to get back once to an older firmware, so you regain the ability to use homebrews.

Otherwise the only hope is that someone will be able to crack the 3.60 keys, and so make custom firmwares of that version possible.

Yes I said NO each time.. I did get too recovery mode and have the firmware on the USB.

When I get to Step 3 and connect the USB controller, it just checks for firmware and says its not the 3.60 firmware

I then get the error (8002F2C5)

I do hope someone can crack the 3.60 keys.

I was just wondering. I have a spare drive myself. But my ps3 has 3.56 and I was wondering if I put in a new drive would it let me install 3.55 on it?

Unfortunately no. The original PS3s look for the FW on the 256mb NAND flash not the hard drive. If you have a 16mb NOR PS3(slims and last of the fats) part of the FW is saved on the hard drive as well, due to the smaller size of these newer flash chips.

So as you can see the PS3 'remembers' what firmware it is on regardless of hard drive.

Does it say its not the latest firmware or no updates found?

If its still seeing it would a pup thats had all its version strings modified to say 3.61 or more be seen and installable?

I have no idea whether pup files are encrypted with the same keysets that get revoked with the update and i no longer have my 3.60 deck to try it? Most likely has been tried and failed in the distant past...

It says its not the 3.60 firmware..I would think someone knows how to get by that, but they aren't coming forward, or maybe no one does know.

I may have access to a 3.60 deck later this week. I will go ahead and mod a pup file to see if i can get the ps3 to accept it.

Although it may work i will not yet be installing it until i have a better understanding of the authentication process of the updates as it may well result in a brick

Well I wish you luck with it. I wouldn't want you too brick your PS3 though.

is it possible to replace the nand from an older ps3 and format the harddisk.. and install other fws??

i mean if i have a 3.60+ ofw then i change my nand from an older ps3 (not on the latest fw) is this a possibility to downgrade??

i think the nand is on the motherboard. u can only rewrite it with an nand writer
