Transfer games via the internet? That sounds looney.

If the internal drive is going to be the only way to store 4gb+ filesized games....then it would easy make sense to me to have the option of setting the ps3s main hdd to be outside the main body.

At the moment I have a tidy setup with a USB hdd docking station, a usb selector switch (a bit like the old scart selector switches used to get), which feed my Popcorn Hour, HTPC, Wii, and jtag 360. With that I can place my hdds (both 2.5" and 3.5") into it depending on what I want to do and easy access all my files/movies/backups.

With a similar setup, one can potentially get around the hdd limitation by having alternative hdds with games on. After all, a 250gb-500gb or so hdd isn't going to hold many ps3 backups on, and an external USB drive isn't the answer as that only supports fat32 at the moment (maybe hfs or something at later date?)

Maybe the internal hdd could be set to external by using an esata connection perhaps? (I've only owned ps3 for a few months and have never looked at changing hdd so not sure of how its connected - but presumably its just sata....so esata should be easy???)

Sooooo....esata the main hdd to a docking station- and theres a potential multiple hdd solution?

I used a cable like this to an external hdd case with esata. 2tb 3.5" 7200 drive with no 4gb file limit.

you used it specifically on the ps3 you mean? or just in general use?

If on ps3 then perfect.....ideal solution to having 2tb+ storage for ps3 without the size limit.

Only negatives I could see, is that some user data would have to be duplicated on each hdd if you had 2 or more, such as user settings and profile info (unless thats held on nand or elsewhere?)

Also...you wouldn't be able to use it on the 2nd ps3 upstairs? Am I right in thinking the 'internal' hdd is locked to the console - so running on a different console would wipe it?...but stilll.....its a viable option...even just for the single 2tb drive

I'm using that cable to an esata external case on my PS3. Works fine.
Only issue is that there's a red cable sticking out the side, lol

    *EDIT*

Hmm, getting the idea were talking warez/pirated games here

    is this allowed?

You guys are walking a very (and I mean VERY) fine line here... I'm no mod, but I know them and I'd drop the subject if I were you.

Sierra055 did you have to do any mod on your ps3 or just remove the hard drive and in plug in the cable. and then connect to an extrnal hard drive with esata port.

hope my original idea isn't classed as an idea for piracy.

It's for the purpose of fitting more 4gb+ filed games onto the same internal hdd than a 2.5" drive allows and/or allowing them to be swapped between 2 ps3s in the same house.

Now the esata cable solution seems perfect, and a 2tb 3.5" should be more than enough for now. Pretty sure I have an esata cable kicking around somewhere, so I'll have to look at trying to remove the existing hdd. Only problem is I'll lose access to my existing PSN games......unless theres a known way to transfer psn games/saves from one hdd to another when changing hdds without having to redownload them all.
