Showtime & other Noob Questions
Showtime & other Noob Questions –
I been reading the forums here and googling showtime for the ps3. The only thing I got out was that you can watch hd movies and listen to music off of your ps3. Can't the ps3 already do all of that stuff? I am sure I am missing something, but what is the purpose of having showtime? I just want to know, so that I can consider installing it. I seen a youtube plugin for it as well, which I am a big youtube fan. Is showtime already installed if I have the latest multiman? Sorry for the noob question.
Should I also look into getting other things? I have blackbox to ftp files and multiman of course (I believe thats it). I also read about spoofing the system so that it will stop trying to update? Is this really needed? Any other programs I should consider getting?
thanks for your help all.
Yes the ps3 can already play video files but it is extremely limited on the format and quality of the videos. A ps3 can't play large high quality videos on it's own do mainly to file structure limitations. Typically adding a video to the PS3 OS is limited to a 4 Gig max AVI file and it is only compatible with a limited amount of codecs. Showtime will let you play any size mkv file or avi file that the ps3 can't handle on it's own. If you have a high definition tv (1080i or 1080p) then try loading 2 different copies of the same movie to see the difference. The first being the largest AVI file you can find (up to 4 gigs) through the standard ps3 os the other being the best mkv file you can find through showtime. A good 2 hour movie will range from 10-15 gigs depending on how it was recorded. If you have a 3D tv, then it's even better for you. These mkv files on a high def tv are way better than the standard PS3 video player. As for your other question, there's some good software for the PS3. If you like old school games, then check out the emulator pack for multiman or ScummVM. I like the Discworld games for ScummVM but I'm a Terry Pratchet fan. ReActPSN 2.0 is also good (check out the Lara Croft game or Red Faction Guerilla). There's some other good software too, it just depends on what you're into
ok great, thanks for the clear up, I knew I was not grasping everything.
No problem. Once you start using it for the higher end videos that are out there, you won't use the standard player anymore. You should also check out the plugins when you load up showtime. You can download them straight from showtime and they give you access to tons of online videos
I downloaded the updated version of showtime and installed the plug ins. When I go to megaviewer -> icefilms ->click a video,
I get an error that says
unable to open resource
megaviewer:videos.(long string of numbers and letters)
file not supported
How can I fix this? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
I have the same problem with some of them. Sometimes they work sometimes they don't. I think it's an online server error or maybe you're behind a firewall. I'm not really sure. It's all a work in progress, but you usually see updates for showtime or it's plugins every week or two. You could always post a question in one of the showtime threads. Maybe someone who knows more about it will fill you in
that stinks, yea and my ps3 crashes whenever i go to youtube plug in. It just stinks that the good stuff doesn't seem to be supported lol. so if i want to play my blue ray just go into dev_bdvd?
I've actually never bought a bluray movie. I like video files better (they're free)

Latest showtime unoffical releases have some crashes/freezes.
For know i think you should install an old version 3.3.307 for instance.
I think andreas oman (main showtime developer) is resolving the issues so in the next showtime updates i think the freezes will be resolved
