i have never done anything like this before to a console, so i really want to try it out and see how it works. the most i have done is simple things like different roms on my android phones,
Not necessary. If you really want to be safe, and all you want to do is access the internet (not PSN), then do what I did. Change your console id. There is software out there that can do this for you. Just remember to write down your original console id. After that set it to all zeros. If you ever want to get back on PSN, just restore your old console id. Boom.
I'm just curious, if you've never connected your PS3 to the internet, why are you so scared of getting banned?
