Topic. I've had it disconnected the entire time, but I read some places that I'm not at risk if I do connect it?

your not at risk its fine just make sure automatic updates are off and be sure you dont accidently update it or someone else the thing i found annoying when connected to internet was the games updates popping up every couple of minutes if i hadnt updated it thats the only reason i have mine turned off and incase the kids or my partner accidently updates it

There's no way Sony can ban my console?

Main thing is turn off automatic updates (like badboyz said) itll try and update some of your games too if it succeeds its not a big deal as you can downgrade game update patches but not firmware. Also dont get on PSN (when CFW is installed) cause theyll ban that console if you plan on going back to OFW someday to get on PSN.

Although it's technically possible, I'm pretty sure they won't. I've had my system with custom firmware connected to the internet for over a year with no problem.

my question would be if they ban the ps3, is it as simple as a swapping anew hard drive or format to get back on the PSN, or does it some how register a serial number with the ps3 itself?

Replacing/formatting your hard drive will not help if banned. The console id is not stored there.

ok thanks, that was my big worry, i guess i could just buy another ylod ps3 for 40 bucks on craigslist and use that until it gets banned..
i have never done anything like this before to a console, so i really want to try it out and see how it works. the most i have done is simple things like different roms on my android phones,
