My PS3's bluray movie playback has been broken since I downgraded my firmware 2 years ago.

Are there any PS3 homebrew apps that could rip a BD video disc and save it into MKV or MP4 format straight to the PS3 HDD? I figure something like that would be a neat workaround for people who had their movie playback functionality permanently broken.

the downgrade doesnt permanently break playback. it can be recovered though takes some effort. But no there isn't a tool for this.

Thank you for The response. I have read about fixing the blu ray playback but last I checked it involves knowing what was the last blu ray movie played on the system?

Unfortunately we bought the 60gb model used from GameStop and I have no idea what movie that would have been.

Have there been any developments or alternative methods since then?
