Need Help Please –
I am new to the PS3 Scene, but not new to modding.
I am very familiar on how to mod Xbox 360, PS2, Xbox, and older consoles.
I have received the Ps3USBJailBreak which comes blank (without firmware) and therefore I can use available firmware (PS3USBJailBreak, PSgroove, PSfree...).
My question is what firmware do I want to use - that has a high compatibility rate that runs almost all backup games and can get updates for games?
I also want to know what Hermes Payload does and is it necessary?
Also is there a list of what games need to be on the internal and what games can be on the external hard drive?
I think I read somewhere that the external hard drive needs to be FAT32??
Do I also need to format my internal drive before I do anything? Will I lose game saves and games that I downloaded from PS3 Network?
I basically want what is best for the PS3USBJailbreak that is out right now.
Can some point me in the right direction on what to get and download in a decent tutorial for someone like me?
I read online the basics from PS3 USB Jailbreak website, but you guys here have the inside knowledge of what is best and current.
I appreciate any advice and help.
Hermes v4b is a payload that you install on your device. Currently it is the most compatible. Look for the thread specifically for Hermes v4b in the Homebrew Jailbreak sub-forum (it's either there or in General Jailbreak) for the hex files for your board. The Hermes v4b payload has the best compatiblity, but it has to be run in conjunction with a good backup manager. Right now, the top of the pack is Rogero's or AVCHDMan (MultiMan) as they're the ones that are still coming out with updates. Soon enough all the devs on here from moh's OM, Rogero's Manager, AVCHDMan, and Gaia are all getting together to make Unified Manager, which will be a colaberation between them for the best compatibility possible.
Thanks - but what file do I need with the PS3Usbjailbreak

Thanks for the quick reply.
What Hermes Payload file do I need with the PS3Usbjailbreak and how do you go about installing it with the backup manager?
Do you run it from a usb memory stick and install it to the hard drive or what, very confused here.
Is there a step by step tutorial out there for the using Hermes Payload and one of the backup managers you stated?
Hermes payload is what it's installed on your jailbreak device. Just went to your devices homepage and found the d/l link to the updater: http://www.ps3usbjailbreak.com/down/...REAK_1.2.2.rar
Just download and install that. It has Hermes v4b included as one of the firmwares to flash.
Once you've booted up into JB mode, you'll want to connect a thumb drive or an external HDD with a backup manager package at the root of the drive. You'll go to the new Install Packages option in the Game XMB. Once you select that, you'll see the package that's sitting on your drive. Install it. Now, it will be listed as an option in the Game XMB. Go there and start backing up your games.
Oh, by the way, you're welcome
A few more questions please
A few more questions please –
Can you install all games to an external drive or do some of them have to be internal? Read awhile ago that some games only work internally, true?
What format does the external (thumb drive for backup manager) and external hard drive for games have to be in? FAT32 is what I think I read awhile ago??
What backup manager do you suggest using for allowing game updates that is easy to use and install? Anyone that has game covers??
1. You can install most games onto the external HDD. External format has to be FAT32. Because of that limitation, if the game you're backing up has files over 4gb, you'll have to back it up on internal to play. Not to say, you can't back it up to the external with some BM's though. With certain BM's it will auto split the files over 4gb, and if you decide to copy/move the game to the internal (using a BM that supports this) it will auto join those files again so it can be played appropriately.

Both are still being updated until the Unified Manager comes out (the devs of those 2 managers and Gaia and moh's OM are all joining together to create a manager together with the best features from all the other managers). Rogero's is going to be the most compatible (he's mostly concerned about games running), and AVCHDMan has multiple different viewing styles (including Cover Mode, Background Art mode, etc). AVCHDMan has a learning curve though. Most of the options are configurable and I believe in the latest version he made a menu to change those options. It also has a built in filemanager (pretty handy). Both managers will allow game updates. Game update installing though is mostly handled by your payload. It's what has the ability to allow retail updates.
Just a few more questions
Just a few more questions –
Okay I have Hermes Payload v.4 installed and a couple backup managers.
Why doesn't Hermes support no disc to play backups?
Is there a way to not have a blu-ray (game or movie) to play backups and if so which backup manager can do this and does updates with most games that actually work?
I have an external 1TB hard drive formatted to FAT32, and I want to use this via networked to my router (DLINK DIR825 Gigabyte Router) and my whole house is networked down to gigabyte switches. I want to put backup games on it and then run the ones that will work via external from it and I have installed a 640gb internal harddrive on my PS3 to play games that only work on it.
My question is how do I set this up?
Is there a backup manager that can see my networked drive and be able to load backups from it?
No backup managers support NAS drives yet. And Hermes does support diskless. The compatibility isn't 100% though. To try to load a game diskless, take the game out of your PS3, open your BM, select which game you want to load, you'll be back at the XMB, goto app_home/PS3_GAME and press X. If the game works diskless, it should load, if not, you'll get a black screen.
