Minimus 32 AVR USB issues
Minimus 32 AVR USB issues –
11-16-2010,11:49 PM
Alright, so I purchased a Minimus 32 AVR USB (Modchip.ca|Modchips & Accessories for Wii, DSi, Xbox 360, PS3, PS2 :: PS3 :: NEW Minimus 32 AVR USB) and I have followed the steps I got from (http://www.minimususb.com/minimus_v14.pdf).
I have a Slim 160gb PS3, I updated it via USB to version 3.41. I am using Windows 7 (unfortunately all my laptops/desktops are running that OS). Able to update drivers successfully.
Using Flip, I selected ATmega32U2 from the device selection. I am also about to open the USB Port Connection.
I am not sure where I can find "LED_TEST.hex". I tried downloading and using PSGROVE.hex, just for the "hex" of it (:P) and that didn't work on it either. I'm not sure what I'm missing or where to turn to next.
Btw, when I am tryin to get this to run on the PS3, I am unplugging the consoles power, inserting the USB in the first USB slot, I then plug it back in, turn on the power, then I quickly hit the eject button. All I get is a message saying "unknown USB device detected" and nothing extra shows up under the "Game" menu.
Any help would this would be greatly appreciated.

Minimus AVR USB - Powered By Atmel
The following tutorial was created by danieljamie69 from PS3-Hacks.
==============================================
Okay hopefully this can become a Sticky because many people keep asking how to do this.
So you received your Minimus AVR USB dev board in the post....
Required:
Minimus board
FLIP software to flash a hex file to board: Atmel - Page Not Found … ol_id=3886
Device drivers for the minimus: http://www.minimususb.com/files/minimus_x64_drivers.rar
Hex file to flash to minimus: http://www.ps3-hacks.com/download.php?id=95 (Use the "psgroove_backups.hex")
PS3 at firmware NO HIGHER THAN 3.41
An official blu-ray game disc (Any will do)
Backup manager package file (google it)
How to flash a hex file:
Install FLIP software (link above)
Plug the minimus into a USB port on your PC
Right click "My Computer", click "Manage", then click on "Device Manager" in the left hand menu
Find the minimus in the list of devices, right click, click "update device drivers", and locate your unzipped folder (link above).
Run FLIP software
Click: Device > Select and then choose AT90USB162
Click: Settings > Communication > USB then click Open
Click: File -> Load HEX File (link above to correct hex file)
Check if the file name is correct, then press RUN to program chip (Sometimes when you press RUN, nothing happens, if so, click it again)
Check if it says "Verify Pass" at the bottom
Hex file should be loaded, now you can safely unplug the device from the PC.
Here is a link to the official PDF help file detailing how to flash a hex to the minimus.
http://www.minimususb.com/minimus_v13.pdf
If you already flashed the wrong hex file?
Press and hold "Reset"
Press and hold "HWB"
Release "Reset"
Release "HWB"
And continue from "Click: Settings > Communication > USB then click Open"
Now that you have the hex file flashed to the minimus AVR, the hard part is over.
How to install backup manager
1) Turn off the PS3 at the wall socket.
2) Plug in the Minimus AVR USB device
3) Turn on your PS3 so that there is a red light indicating that it is in standby mode
4) Press the power touch button, then the eject button immediately after, as fast as you can, and keep hitting eject for a few seconds.
5) On the GAME menu, there should be two new options, one saying install new package files, and the other something like ps3-game/dev blah blah, ignore this one.
6) Put the backup manager package file (link above) onto another USB memory stick, and plug it into the PS3.
7) Click "Install package files" and you should see Backup Manager v1
8) Click X to install it, follow the prompts to go ahead.
9) You should now have backup manager installed on the GAME menu.
How to backup a game
1) Ensure that the PS3 loads up with the option to install package files (as above).
2) Run Backup Manager
3) Insert the disc you want to backup (it should now appear in the list)
4) Use the D-pad to go down so the game is highlighted.
5) There should be two options at the bottom, I think one is to backup and the other is to run it.
6) Click the relevant button to backup, and wait a while (First option is to backup to external drive I think, if you click NO, then you are given the option to install to internal
How to play a backed up game
1) Ensure that the PS3 loads up with the option to install package files (as above).
2) Run Backup Manager
3) Ensure ANY game disc is inside the PS3
4) Scroll down to the backed up game
5) Click Load, or RUN
6) Should be taken back to XMB now.
7) It should appear that the backed up game is now in the disc drive.
8) Run as you would any real game
Important info
Game compatibility list found here:
https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key … &hl=en
Games with INDIVIDUAL file sizes larger than 4GB cannot be backed up to an external drive, as the PS3 only supports FAT32 for external drives.
To copy a backed up game to the PC, use the following FTP program to copy it.
Do NOT update past 3.41.
Check the compatibility list before reporting problems with any games.
Some games can install updates for them, some can't. Some won't play at all.
If you are concerned regarding wear and tear with the Minimus board, they will eventually be releasing an outer casing that you can buy seperately.
Please let me know if I have missed anything from this.
I did all of this on Saturday, with no failure. Successfully backed up Killzone 2 to the internal drive.

That's great, a lot of great info there. Thank you for adding that.
Still not getting it to show up on PS3 though. I re-flashed it with the "psgroove_backups.hex" but still to no avail.
Unplugged PS3>Inserted Mod chip>Plugged in PS3> Powered on system and immediately began hitting the eject button (I've tried holding it down until everything is loaded, as well as constantly pressing it).
Still I have no additional options under the Game section of the menu. (also checked every other menu, just in case :P).
There has got to be something I'm missing here.
Edit: From devices I have to select ATmega32U2, since I have the "Minimus 32 AVR USB larger 32 version", its the only one it works on. I tried selecting AT90USB162, which doesn't work. Just thought I'd mention that before someone points that out as a possible solution.
Didn't realize that psgroove_backups.hex was for the previous 16 version. Downloaded the proper hex from: "http://www.ps3-hacks.com/file/171"
and chose "hermesv4b_minimus_v2.0_avr_usb_atmega32u2_16Mhz.h ex". I should have noticed that something was wrong. After seeing all those youtube vids, I knew there should have been a red light appearing if it was done correctly, whereas before I was only seeing the green light. Though now the folders are empty and there is nothing to install from the "Install Package Files" folder...feel like banging my head against a wall.
Not sure if the pictures help or not, but at least you know where I'm coming from.

I uninstalled Flip and re-downloaded it from their website, I then reset my minimus AVR. I also looked up that hex, which I got here: HotShare - psgroove_hermes_v4_hex_compil-tetsumaki.zip (I'm using the "psgroove_minimus_atmega32u2_16Mhz.hex" from it)
Still have the exact same result, there is nothing in the folder for me to install onto the PS3, its empty. I don't understand it.
The following youtube vid shows you what I've been doing. And what I'm not getting from this.

Make absolutely sure that the drive is formatted to FAT32. exFAT in windows7 IS NOT the same thing. There are many programs that can format something to FAT32.

I'm not sure at what point I'd be formatting anything. I don't see formatting anywhere in any of the steps. What drive would I be formatting? The Minimus AVR isn't recognize as a drive on my PC, but it does have the correct drivers.
Was up a bit too late last night fiddling with this. Any clarity here would be appreciated.

Backup manager package file (google it)
Googling that didn't help for me, since I had no idea what it was for or anything like that. Friend briefly skimmed this and realized I had no USB plugged in afterward without any programs.... A link to a backup manager or examples would be awesome. Just to help people out like myself :P
Got it working now
Thanks people for getting me started.
P.S No link available since friend brought the files over :P
