Media Center? –
05-11-2011,05:24 AM
It's been a few months since I've used the PS3, and was hoping some advances have been made in media center development.
So, is there currently any alternatives to PS3 Media Server to play larg (8GB) mkv files from my windows PC?
Apologies for being ignorant of current options. I tried a few searches, but nothing really appeared to be an option.

Showtime works pretty well (or so I have read)
Make sure you butter the non reflective side of your CD's / DVD's and Blu-Rays so that when you drop them, they land butter side down thus preventing scratches.

Showtime is nice indeed but tends to freeze on some vids

I stream all files to my ps3 , mkv's I usually use mkvtovob and mux and it creates the perfect file to stream full 1080p no matter what the size it , showtime works like crap to be honest , stream if you can it works great ... mkvtovob owns
ps3mediaserver + mkvtovob = perfect!

ps3mediaserver works best for me. plays all my mkv files are full 1080p with no problems, no need for mkv2vob

Unless you stream over wireless, 1080p's a bit dodgy(Still possible you just have to transcode it). Also some MKV's buit with different headers can cause freezing issues in media server. Kinda a bit gay lol.

No. Showtime does not work with SMB shares.
You still need a UPnP server on your PC to access media files stored there.
That is the greatest weakness of Showtime. It really needs SMB support.
