Keep getting 80028f14 error on /app_home/PS3_GAME/ –

I'm one of the unlucky bastards that got his PS3's BD drive break down after the upgrade to firmware 3.0 (thanks Sony!!!
) Not wanting to pay the extortionate amount Sony wants for repairs, my PS3 had been gathering dust since last X-Mas, which is when the drive crapped out.
Much to my content the PS3 has been hacked now and I once again expect to be able to play the games that I bought. They are useless to me now due to the defective drive, but the PS3 Jailbreak opens up enough opportunities to get games loaded and running without the use of a BD drive!
For the past week and a half I've been frantically trying to boot games on my jailbroken PS3, but I just can't get it to work. I've read hundreds of forum pages and exhausted all leads and ideas to get it to work, but have failed so far and I hope this post will perhaps generate responses that will push me in the right direction. I'll try to explain the problem and my setup as good as I can.
PROBLEM:
After selecting a game in Open Backup Manager (or any other BM) I drop to XMB, which is expected behaviour. Then when I navigate to /app_home/PS3_GAME and try to launch the game by selecting it, I always get the following error: "An error occurred during the start operation (80028f14)".
SETUP:
PlayStation 3 (FAT model 40GB HDD, European). Dead BluRay drive. Eject and insert mechanism still works and discs spin up on insertion but are never recognized in XMB, which makes me suspect the laser is borked.
JB device: PSFreedom on iPhone 3G using OpeniBoot, iPhodroid. Installed according to instructions on PSFreedom wiki / iPhoneLinux.
Payload: Hermes (boot games without disk)
BM: Open Backup Manager 1.13
Games tried, all failed:
- Burnout Paradise
- Dead Rising 2
- Tekken 6
STUFF I TRIED TO FIX THE PROBLEM:
I first suspected that the payload I had on my iPhone was an old version that did not support diskless booting of games and/or no peek and poke support. So I replaced the android.img.gz and zImage files on my iPhone (in /private/var) with the updated ones that can be found on the PSFreedom wiki on the iPhoneLinux page in the "Additional Files" section. I replaced the files using SFTP and did a chmod 777 after they were uploaded to /private/var. Unfortunately I still got error 80028f14.
I originally transferred the games over FTP using blackb0x's FTP server. Suspecting that it was a file permission issue which was causing my problem, I then used Open Backup Manager 1.13 to copy the games to the external USB HDD, deleted them from the internal HDD and then copied them back again from USB HDD to internal HDD. It seems that Open Backup Manager does a chmod 777 after copying a file, something blackb0x's FTP server does not. I had hoped that copying the game files back and forth using Open Backup Manager would fix the permissions and also the game booting error. Unfortunately I still get error 80028f14, although I think I can now safely eliminate file permissions as a possible cause. I get the 80028f14 error regardless of whether I launch a game from the internal HDD or the external USB HDD.
I tried launching the games using both patch mode and normal mode in Open Backup Manager 1.3, but neither worked.
HELP!
Anyone out there with a dead BD drive that got any game to boot diskless? Anyone have any tips or suggestions on what I could try next? I'm not out to pirate every game out there. I just want to be able to play most of the games that I legally bought without shelling out my hard earned cash on repairs or buying a new PS3 and filling Sony's pockets even further. That would be like rewarding them for the fact that they killed my BD drive.
Even if I can't get games to boot, the jailbreak is fantastic, because I can now play SNES games on my PS3. My PS3 is not just an expensive door stop anymore!! Thanks to everyone working hard to make this possible! You rule!

doesn't sound like you're using the hermes payload. try to reflash and do it again.

From what i have read, you need to have a partially working bluray drive not a completely dead one!
If just the laser was bad i think it would be ok!
But i also read that u can connect any bluray drive, doesnt have to be a ps3 one!
Obviously you couldnt play a game off a disc as the drives are tied to the original system they were installed in!
Your ps3 is erroring because there basically is no drive at all!
But like i said,i have just read this so someone else may be able to confirm if indeed i am correct!
Read your post a bit quickly and i see that you have a partially working drive but this could still be your problem!

if it wasn't detecting the drive at all i don't think it will boot up.

Thx for the comments guys!
at jaekid :
So when you have the /app_home/PS3_GAME entry in XMB, it doesn't automatically mean that you have a Hermes payload? I really hope that it's just an incorrect payload, as you suggest, because it would explain a lot. I've tried all the payloads that were available on the PSFreedom wiki site, but I will try them again tomorrow just to be sure.

just having the option on the xmb doesn't mean that you are using the hermes payload. just means that the exploit successfully booted your machine into development mode.
when you use the hermes payload and select a game in bm, it will exit back to xmb, then when you scroll up to the app home menu, the game will display just like you have the disc inserted.
trust me, you are using the wrong payload.

I can confirm when I scroll up to the app home menu entry I do NOT see the game appear, which supports your idea that it's an incorrect payload. Thx, you've given me hope that I might solve this issue yet! I'll post back here with my progress.

Homebrew. Homebrew is the fix.
