did you press the buttons on the board in the right order to set it into programming mode?

Have you installed the correct drivers? Make sure you're doing the button combo correctly. Once you've hit the buttons and the device is in DFU mode, go to device manager on your computer. (Just search device manager in start menu) You should see one of the devices connected to your computer should be: unknown device (AVR DFU) or something like that. If it doesn't say DFU you didn't do it properly.
Anyway, right click it and go to properties. Go to the drivers tab. Hit install drivers (or update drivers) and manually browse to the driver. It's in program files\atmel\flip 3.4.1\usb\ (install the 64bit or 32bit appropriately)
Now launch the flip program and continue to follow the flashing guide.
