I was wondering why I haven't heard anyone even talk about trying a custom XMB. I'm sure the tools are available at this point, why haven't we seen any? I really hate the PS3 default XMB and themes don't fix the issue.

You can customize the XMB with MFW. Mainly, remove options that are redundant and put new options in wherever you want them. Also, you can catagorize your applications be pressing /\ on them and setting a Sort heading. Once you have set what you want on your apps, press square to change view style and you'll have all your applications collected together in folders. Other then these suggestions, I think that's all the customization you can do to the XMB.

XMB is such a perfect dashboard, easy to navigate with just a controller.

why would you wanna customize it any further than skinning it and maybe removing unused menu entries via MFW?

I tried my hand at using rcomage, but after recompressing some of the icons were messed up. S0ny has a tool for making your own xmb themes.

I believe he's reffering to a CXMB like psp that improves customization of themes, changing boot logo, the logo that comes up when you lauch a game, etc.

Right. I don't mean just taking off some of the icons, I already know about MFW. The reason I don't like the default XMB is because it's plain and navigating to specific things is slow, I'd rather have a custom XMB that looks better and functions better.

All rco edits from my understanding. Gliitch from ps3hax.net made Gliitch's Awesome XMB which was rco edits in flash it was different then just removing a few icons with mfw maker. If you feel brave enough to mess around in flash then check it out. As far as a CXMB it isn't possible...yet.
