Does booting Console in the openiboot menu also cause such a messy screen or is it only booting android?
Which android files are you trying with? Is it Zaxtron front end?
You write that you have tried deleting and copying them over again, but not if you have tried different Android files. I would do that as a first attempt.
I am using Zaxtron and it is recommendable for loading payloads. However, if you want Hermes v4b, you need to install that only.
I grabbed my files from IPhoneLinux - PSFreedom Wiki
or in the ipod touch/iphone thread.
Remember to set the read/write permissions to 777, if you haven't done that.
I am using iPod Touch and therefore haven't tried iphodroid, so I'm not familiar with that process.
Update: Here is the link for payloads for iPhone 3g

my openiboot doesn't have a console option
i have appleOS,Android,Install (installs openiboot permanently) and uninstall (uninstalls openiboot).
i assume it happens only for android boot because the screen goes messy only when the console finishes loading linux.
i use the iphone 3g downgrade files i need to come from 3.42 to 3.41.
i tried changing the android.img.gz and zimage to regular payloads but all gave the same result.
i don't have any idea what to do..
i think maybe if i delete all of iphodroid's driver files i might get it to work.. the problem is i don't know where are they located on my iphone...
i used the one shot installation of android + openiboot located on the link you gave to iphonelinux maybe if i delete everything it installed i can manage to redoit right.. any clues?

solved!
what i did was SSHing to the iphone using WhCP
deleting all the iphodroid files on var folder which are :
android.img.gz , cache.img , system.img , userdata.img and zImage
as long with sd8686.bin and sd8686_helper.bin which are located in the var/firmware folder
and then put the correct android.img.gz and zImage on the resources folder of the one shot iphodroid installer downloaded from psfreedom wiki and it works =]
