Is Backup Manager just a huge pile of crap?

I tried backing up my personal copy of 3D Dot Game Heroes using Backup Manager to my internal drive. I then tried running said backup (which is supposed to work) and it just crashed after the first "ATLUS" title card.
I then copied this backup to my PC using FTP and then re-ripped the game directly from the blu-ray using the FTP server. I then did a comparison of the two folder structures and found a TON of files from Backup Manager that were 0kb in size.
What the hell is going on?
Is backup manager just a giant pile of monkey poo? Should I always backup with the FTP program and then transfer back to the PS3?
Thanks.
EDIT: Nevermind... turns out my initial transfer of the Backup Manager version to my PC got screwed up somehow. All the files are exactly the same but the game still doesn't run.

lol ok i think i know why you think some files are 0kb in size do they happen to be the ones that you FTP'd to you pc? if so its the client etc that you are using not the backup manager i have loads of games i own backed up and they all work fine one did freeze on a loading screen when making a save so i waited then quit the game and restarted it and it loaded the save and worked fine... so my advice use filezilla with correct settings to transfer files via ftp

Might I ask what those "correct settings" are? Because 3d dot heroes doesn't work for me either, nor does KZ2.
I've used Filezilla for all my ftp needs as well.

the correct settings would be:
Host: [YOUR PS3's Local IP address can be found at the top of the PS3 FTP Server homebrew app]
Port: 21
Server Type: FTP File Transfer Protocol
Logon Type: Normal
User:FTPD12345
Password: [Anything you want but i left mine blank]
[Now in the Transfer Settings Tab]
Transfer mode: Active
[check the box for limiting the number of simultanious connections]
maximum number of connections: 1
also you can use a differnet ftp client if you find that filezilla is not working for you but i dont think you will have any major problems with filezilla, also it wouldent hurt to connect your ps3 directly to your pc/laptop to get faster speeds if u want info on that i can tell you how i boosted my speed but i feel a bit like im going off topic if i start to mention it here

I have have way to many problems with the ftp app. Just crashes alot but im sure it will get better with future releases.
But when i want to transfer things from the ps3 or vice versa i just use the file explorer app. I never have problems with it and it works great. Just make sure you have the latest release because it will let you transfer to and from usb. Try that and see if it helps any.

Thanks for the tips, what cable should I get a cat6 crossover or a cat6 patch cable, I'm going connect drectly to my ps3 so what cable will give me the best speeds?

Host -> Host (ie: pc -> ps3) direct connections always requires crossovers. Use patches if you have a hub, switch, or router in between.

You don't need a crossover.
I use a normal cable. Modern computers will automatically change accordingly.

I Had problems with 3D Dot Game Heroes too. I copied the game with FTP to my internal and it hangs after the Atlus screen (I had 1 time that i could play the game normally 1 time out of 5). Then I put 3D Dot Heroes on an external drive. I tried an usb flash drive and an external HDD under GAMEZ and it works flawlessly!
Hope this works for you!
