Alternative Hardware to run PSFreedom on ...
I am just new to the forum and follow all the ps3 "dongle" theads in several boards. Most interesting for me has been the work for the N900.
Unlucky as I am I just have iPhones and could not try it out. I am from Germany and it is quite hard right now to even get some parts for soldering a pcb or directly buying some usb dev board. Based on the instructions for porting the N900 solution to any other linux enabled device I was looking around in the corner with all the old hardware in the shelf to find a suitable device.
I think there is a very broad base of hardware which could be used to have psfreedom working on it. From my understanding the only real important things is the capability to support the USB Slave mode and beeing able to use linux. It is often explained what USB Slave mode is but some didn't get it at all :) A normal PC has just support for the host mode, external devices like for example hdd's, usb memory, tv adapters, usb dev boards :) and so on. The slave mode means you could connect the device also to the pc like again as hdd or whatever. So what I want to say, we all for sure have some gadgets lying around.
For example old Rockbox enabled MP3 players could do, like old Cowon X5 (I found this in the shelf) - this one supports even hostmode which is not usual. I found some old Dvico TViX media players, for which hacked firmwares are available - they also support both USB modes. Any other media player which could also be used as external harddrive would do, if it already runs linux or it could be flashed.
I am not a programmer at all, but the instructions gave me the feeling to give it a try. Maybe there are even devices using the same usb controller than N900 ... but for me it is sometimes not possible to even find out which controller is on the pcb. Google is not always a real help to find the specs for components used on the pcb ... maybe we should start a list to have an overview which devices could work and name the used controllers onboard the pcb.
I tried with an hacked dockstar, but like a pc it does not support the slave mode, without modifications to the hardware... I will now start to investigate a little bit more the tvix 5100 multimediaplayer, because i think this could work.
Anyway I would like to invite everybody to take a look around at home for other eventually usable hardware and name it here. Maybe I am not the only one who does not sell the old stuff on eBay :)
Check it out:)
