My 40 gig just YLOD'd (refurb from a YLOD in 2009), but it wasn't even warm at the time. I had just turned it on to test a DVD burn and it died right when I hit X when it asked "are you sure you want to quit DVD playback?" It was on for maybe a total of 3 minutes. I felt the bottom & back and it was still cold! One beep, red blinking light, then it powered off. When I powered it back on, I got the YLOD. 2nd in less than a year, but now my warranty has expired..
The funny part (like a cold YLOD isn't funny already) is that not 2 hours before, another YLOD I bought off eBay arrived in the mail. I was going to fix that one so I didn't have to upgrade past 3.15 & lose linux, but still have a system on which to play RDR. Turns out the eBay YLOD was a 60 gig CECHA01* with a virgin warranty seal, not a 40 gig like the auction said! *That's the hardware based backwards compatible model for the casual reader.
So anyhow, I'm kind of torn. I have two YLODs with good seals, one a CECHA01, the other a CECHH01 with all my junk on it (including my prized gentoo install which I recently updated from 2008.0 to 10.0). I'm not sure if I should fix them, send one or both to Sony to fix (and lose linux), send to a pro with a rework station, or just sell everything outright & get a slim, or sell everything & get a 360. I'm leaning toward doing the heatgun fix on the CECHH01 and sending the CECHA01 to Sony to fix. Would I get another backwards compatible model back? Has anyone had the heatgun fix last longer than a few months? Any advice or recommendations would be much appreciated, as is the fact you read this far in the first place.
