Smeone finally decided to burn those images.

If you try and play a ripped and burnd blue ray, movie the ps3 says it's an invalid disc (as well it should).

If you try and burn one of those games, it says it's a data disc, and lets you browse it, but will not launch the game. GO figure. You can look at the pretty graphics in .png fils.

Best shot at crackign the ps3 i(not that us legitimate developers would ever do such a thing...) is to get a rogue firmware update signed somehow to corrupt the hypervisor.

Someone will probably make a Blu Ray player for Linux on the ps3, that would be escaping the PS3's checking right?

This is exactly what has me confused.

First of all this system is using firmware to update its umm system i guess.
Dont know if game systems that use firmware (never heard of home game consoles using firmware) would need a modchip to bypass its media playing restrictions.

Well, If your running an OS on PS3 then how free will that OS run on the system?

I think it's firmware will directly decide what media will be handled they way it should be no matter the OS installed.
Seems a little strange or confusing to me but i know Sony just cant make it that easy for ripped media.

The key is Linux and firmware, possibly in tandem.

From what I've read it won't be this easy. I've read somewhere, I can't remember where at the moment, that the drive is emulated on linux through a security layer which is probably tied up with the firmware. So, if the PS3 by itself won't do it, the linux won't be able to either if this is true. The key to pulling this off might lie in flashing the firmware with linux in some sort of way, but thats up to the big guns of the scene.

Linux can read the raw data fine. and it's been proven that the graphics aren't encrypted.

And if they were really so stupid as to not encrypt the program data somehow, then we aren't very far off i think. But since the cell processor itself has the hypervisor built in, it's gonna be tricky to deal with. A mod chip can always be made that shows the hypervisor wha it needs to see, but fidning this out is gonna be trcky.
