why some games can't run sans disc?

I always have a disc in my PS3 when I run back ups, so I never have to worry about if a game will run discless. I'm still very curious as to why some games run fine discless, while others do not.
Is it some check the developes put in the code? Is it a technical issue, or is it simply a mystery?

I don't understand it either why some games are compatible and some aren't. I wouldn't think there would be a difference between discs. Also the Ubisoft games like Assassins Creed needs you to add a folder ASSASSIN_ISO folder and Prince Of Persia (2008) needs you to add POP_ISO folder even though both are just empty placeholders. That Prince of Persia one had me hung up for months on until I put 2 and 2 together that they were made by the same company and I already knew about the Assassins Creed fix
